need help on pricing an 85 Targa with 49,000 miles
I am fairly new to this forum and would like an idea on what I should ask for my 85 Guards Red Targa.
It has 49,000 miles from 4 owners. I have some of the service records from the PO's but not all. I have the COA which states it has Sport shocks, Cruise, Forged Alloy wheels, Blaupunkt radio, Limited Slip Diff. Color stated is Guards Red with the Champagne Special Leather w/ leatherette beltline/PU. The top was rebuilt by Dave Brown in Boulder and has never been folded since done. I bought this car this last spring from someone in the area (Fort Collins, CO) who had owned for 20 years. They only sold it because their mechanic said it had a 75% leakdown in cyl. # 5. The other 5 were 3%. It is a Colorado car since new. There is no rust on the car at all and is mostly original paint. A minor fender bender (someone backed into her right front fender) caused a new fender to be installed etc from a great shop in town and now it takes an expert to be able to tell. The only non-stock items (I have all the original parts) are a Nardi SteeringWheel, D-Zug 917 shift knob, Euro tail lights, and Coco Mats. Everything else is stock. Tires have maybe 3k on them. Two months ago the motor/tranny was pulled by my Porsche mechanic, the heads were sent to Ollie's where a valve job was done, the heads were blueprinted and new exhaust studs were installed as well. I also had a new clutch disc installed since the motor was out. The entire top half the engine was resealed. All new bushings installed in the shifter. The bill was almost $9000. This was going to be my Porsche for life. Last month it won "Peoples Choice" trophy at our local Porsche dealer's show which had over 50 P cars there plus lots of VW etc. The interior is perfect and there are no dents or dings on the body. Life changes are pushing me to sell this car tho I don't have to but I think it is the prudent thing to do. So what is it worth? I have thought of selling on BAT but need a reserve price. Hagerty's web site says ~$37,000 tho mileage is not taken into account. Looking for advice from the experts.

Checked up on your previous posts. Real seller, real car. Looks immaculate. If you sell it for less than 40k you are throwing money away. If experts tell you that GR is a minus, then dont sell it to them.
Love the picture where you snap the car with the missus totallt caught off guard. My advice: keep the car for your kids and the wife for yourself. Here is the pic of my old targa from the same thread. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/170660-ultimate-targa-thread-67.html#post5874825 Beginning to regret selling it, but my new 78 928 really takes the itch away. Look for a nice 928 manual. Should run you less than half of the C. Cheers from Copenhagen, Christian Last edited by christiandk; 09-25-2014 at 10:46 AM.. |

What was the story with the 75% leakdown in one cylinder? Was it corrected with the recent work or was it never really present or (?)
That's the only question I'd have. Sounds like a nice car.

40k sounds like a good number, in this market I would not accept less!
If you are on the fence about selling I would wait, looks like a very nice car and would be very difficult to find another in similar condition.

It looks like a complete top-end overhaul was performed, for $9k I hope the dead cylinder was fixed!
He should have had to shop perform a compression and leak down test to help the sale, but surely it's fine... The limited slip low mile 915 is nice. I'd be interested in how well it shifts - since most 915's have well over 100k miles and several rebuilds on them! The only detractors I see - it's a targa and it's red. With the documented engine work and low miles (and nice condition), it should fetch $40-$45k or so I'd guess, if it was an Arrow Blue coupe, maybe $50k? |

Thanks guys - Of course the leaky cylinder was fixed ! Ollie's in Lake Havasu City, AZ are as good as it gets from what I understand on this website at doing this kind of work. I saw the heads when they came back. I have pics. They are beautiful. One exhaust valve had to be replaced. It had build up on it and all the valve guides were replaced of course as well as all the exhaust studs. It is a sweet running 3.2. Thanks for your help. Mike
