I'm having a hard time valuing my SC with prices all over the place.
 

Hi, I have a 1979 911 SC Targa with 101k miles. Notable points: Glasurit re-paint 2 years ago (guards red), clutch done at 95,000 miles, all maintenance up to date, new targa top in excellent condition. The car is dead original sans aftermarket head unit and speakers.

Interior is immaculate, underside is rust-free sans heater boxes, everything works. Car has the original cookie cutters that were refinished at the same time as the re-paint with new Pirelli tires. The car is an absolute blast to drive, runs strong and is very tight. I take it on many road trips. I'm seeing these things priced all over the place and wondering what a fair value to place on the car would be?

25k? Targa takes away a bit for me. You could hope for 30, but I think the number is closer up $25. I could be dead wrong, but that's my .02 cents.

$25 or below. Not much higher. IMHO>

I'm not as up to date as some of these guys on values but it's a great looking car!

Such a clean car. I got to see it in person and the paint is really stunning.

SC's have been creeping up the last few years, and this example looks to be in excellent shape with the high quality paint I'd agree that $25k +/- is a good start.

Being an excellent example means that the slight detractors (targa, red, cookies) don't bring the value down much.

While it may be a red Targa the cookies and chrome trim look fantastic in my opinion and set it apart from the rest.

Nice car! Do you have a link to any photos of it so we could get a look at interior, engine, etc.?

I tend to think that the collective wisdom on the forum is probably about right on price. I actually think that the staggered cookie cutters are a nice feature, especially given that you don't often see them. Your car also has chrome trim and brushed aluminum look rollover bar. Most SCs you see have blacked out trim (often faded), so for those who pine for a longhood but who can't swing the prices, this car offers that earlier 70s aesthetic with the early SC motor.

Overall, very nice example!

I think $25k is a very reasonable number. It could go a little higher, but $30k might be the very top for that car, for the person that just has to have this car, this way.

He is asking $23,000 which I think is insanely cheap for what appears to be a well equipped car.

I sold a bone stock but well sorted coupe for $35,000 recently, which IMO should set the market minus the difference of a targa. I do not set that "discount" at $12,000. Especially, if the roof is in good condition.

Your car is beautiful and if one of the bigger sales houses (Auto Gallery, Holt, GR) had it the price would be $30,000 to $40,000. They are patient, I was patient and to get your number you need to be patient.

To me; your car is a $30,000 car.

Oh and I just bought a targa because of the value.......

Thanks for all of the input guys, the car is not for sale but I would be lying if I said 25k is not very tempting - especially with the end of the season around the corner. Decisions, decisions.

I think 30k is right if you are not in a hurry...

What about head studs and chain tensioner update? New clutch is great, but engine surprises would worry me more. Holt would not list a car with these kind of miles and a repaint. He would buy it and ship overseas. Take the $25 k if someone is willing to pay it and run to the bank.

Wow. I'd suggest advertising further afield eg uk. Get familiar with forums over there and sell at those prices. I reckon you'd get £22 so that's what - mid $30s all day long. buyer pays shipping....(?)

I once believed, and was told that my beautiful 83 SC Coupe with 80,000 miles was worth north of $30k, but once on the market realized differently. Lots of romanticism and dreaming about these cars. Great driving cars? Heck yeah. But a 100,000 mile example with a repaint is not gonna fetch "mid $30's all day long" unless the buyer is either out of touch with the market, must have that exact car, or is too impatient. The only way an SC will fetch mid $30's TODAY is if it is low miles, original paint/no wrecks, and has all updates like head studs, chain tensioners, etc.

Someday the car in question will go in the $30's, but then a low mile original concours SC will hit mid 40's or 50. But that's down the road. Good luck to the original poster who has a nice car. But don't get too carried away with thoughts of of huge payday. Way too many BS artists with lack of funding out there. The market will speak.
