87 Cab Value Opinion Please

Thinking about pulling the trigger on this car and need value opinions for moral support! lol Car has a documented 41k miles, original paint, clean original black interior, original carpet, engine, etc. Had a new top with new cables and motors 2 years ago. Had a complete fuel system flush with new filters and pump earlier this year. All tools books and records, spare never down.

If you are looking to buy, I guess the better question is "what are they asking?" rather than what is the value.

If it is straight stock, down to the radio and speakers, everything works, and can can run & drive nicely with only minor fettling, you are getting a great deal at anything under $30k.

$30-35k is still probably well bought with near collector-level mileage.

$35-40k is probably as-is retail.

if it is fully sorted and detailed, a dealer like Mohr imports would be asking $40-45k.

Undriven cars tend to have some unforeseen gremlins, so there is some downside risk.

We know it has been modded a bit, as it is missing the spoilers. Not a big deal IMO since they are out of fashion anyway, but since it came with them it would be nice if they came with the car, uninstalled.

Thank you for the detailed opinion Colb.

The current owner spoke with the original owners about the car. When the first owners bought the car new, the wife who was getting it as a gift thought the whale tail looked "ridiculous" and did not want the car. They had another white car there with a tan interior that she did not like so the dealer swapped the white non-whale tail decklid from the car with the tan interior and put the whale tail from this car onto the new car that had the tan interior. Problem solved. The decklid on this car is original paint and has never been painted. Can you imagine them doing something like that today? lol

Is the front spoiler not on the car??

That is funny -- I wonder if the dealer made them pay for it anyway?

I can't tell for certain if the front spoiler is there, but it doesn't look like it.

Theoretically, the spoilers work in tandem, and should be together or not at all.

At least that is what I have heard. Driving at street legal speeds it is irrelevant. But if you start to test the car's envelope, a front spoiler without a rear spoiler will make the rear a little loose, and vice versa.

The 3rd brake light was never installed after the tail swap?

Was there supposed to be one? Was a hole drilled for one originally?

The front spoiler is on the car.

Yes -- all US cars '86 and later required a 3rd brake light.

this 87 should have one -- on Cabs they are sort of an appendage above the grill. I assume this deck came off a coupe, which has the third light at the base of the rear window.

That could be that it was swapped from a new coupe. All I was told was that it was off another new car with a tan interior. If that's the case I am grateful that it was a coupe and there was no light! Best possible alternative. lol

Los Angeles craigs, because Porsches are hard to find in California.

Hey karguy -- how does it feel to be an effing tool?

Seriously.

Is there a list of assclown posters who come here acting like they are actually buying for themselves rather than curbstoning?

Maybe I'll Start one.

OMG ...... I can't believe you guys (some of you). Perhaps I should have known better given the deserved reputation for attitude and snobbery Porsche owners have cultivated. Where in my request for information did I say anything about who I was, what my interests or intentions were or what the fate of this car would be? How smug some of you are with the list of expensive cars in your stables. You assume that everyone has the resources to buy a $30k-$50k car to keep as a toy for the occasionally sunny day, and if not, he must be an "Effing tool".

I am a single full time father of an eleven year old daughter, and she comes first. As much as I would love to purchase this car and place it in my six car heated and cooled garage, I can't because I don't even have a garage at my place. I can't indulge that fantasy without harming my daughter and I'm not that selfish. I would also like to fish, race cars and golf more too, but that's not in the cards either. But that's OK, because my daughter is worth every sacrifice.

I have been chasing this car for five years leaving the occasional note. I had hoped I would be in good place if it came available or be cheap enough to own. I had no idea the prices had climbed so high while I was busy working and raising my daughter. Even with all of that persistence I was shocked to see it listed on craigslist a few days ago without even so much as a call after all of my notes. I wound up driving over and after asking for advice here. I paid her her full asking price as she was not negotiable at all. I have had a lot of fun examining it, cleaning it, driving it, but I never allowed myself to think I could actually keep it. But I did get to own it. I have photos of me and my daughter with it. I am living a dream while it's mine. And when it sells, I will go back to reality with hopefully a few dollars to help out. In the mean time, I will enjoy each mile and just looking out the window and seeing it in the driveway. If that makes me a tool, I'm glad to be one.

You were thinking about "pulling the trigger" and needed "moral support" then had it for sale in three days time.

What exactly was the "moral support" for?
At 45k, you'll be staring at it for a while.
