Going Rate for a 3.6?

What should i expect to pay for a 3.6 engine? I see several on eBay for $10-12k but nothing in the forums. Where else should I look?

$8k-$10k, but $12k+ with documented recent rebuild. I've purchased three over the last two years and the only one that did not come as represented, was from this forum. Buyer beware!

It seems like most of his information is 5 years old now.

The only sources I know of is this form, eBay and LA Dismantlers.

Lucky to find a nice 3.6 for less than $10k most need rebuilds. Your better off finding a known basket case and rebuilding it. Any documented rebuilt 3.6 will cost you closer to $18k maybe more. Are you including DME harnesses and exhaust in that price?

Be careful with the dismantlers. I tried several times and they all had one issue or another and were well into the $12k range with high mileage and you don't know what your getting until it arrives.

Agree with ^^^. My Porsche factory-trained mechanic is almost finished rebuilding my 964's 3.6 and I'm told the bill is already edging towards $20k before taxes.

Why do you think everything is going through the roof. I am afraid to sell stuff off for cheap in fear I may need it someday and it will cost me too much to buy. Prices are already going through the roof at Porsche and most items need to be drop shipped from Germany.

Put me down for a nice 3.6 if they make a run of them in the $10k grand range.

You seen what a Polo 4 costs? To manufacture these engine today would be around a $40k engine. Just getting the casting pattern for the case and hitting a minimum production number would be well into 6 figures.

About seven or eight years ago (maybe more) I priced a new crate 3.0 SC engine from the factory - they were still available at the time. It was about $30,000. I'm sure it would be much more today and even higher for a 3.6.

Sand cast aluminum case would not run you close to those numbers. Years ago I used to cast parts for G Force racing truck transmissions and I did engine cases for them as well. A pattern would run you between $6-8K per side. One off production aluminum case halves including heat treating another $2500-3500 per set and then machining costs. Price goes down significantly for quantity. Costs get amortized but I would make any quantity from one set to as many as needed.

I made far more complicated parts than 964 engine case halves. Mostly defense mil spec parts for Helicopters and it wasn't cheap but no where near 6 figures to start up production.
