Incomparably Well Built, World Class Sportscars
Mentioning to a 911 driving/loving/true-believing friend that the a/c on these cars rarely if ever works, he came back with this:
The AC system has also been upgraded to a R134 system that blows very cold. I responded thusly: For $35k or so it would be nice for all the features to work. Can I express, as a fellow auto enthusiast, that I have never encountered a more OVER valued car than these GLP's?? You have truly opened my eyes. When you first told me you bought one and mentioned what you paid, I CRINGED. After some brief research, I discovered that you actually GOT A GREAT DEAL. So I shut my mouth. Can you guys think of another comparable, utterly insane price vs. value correlation? I don't think you can compare these to say, a 50 year old collector car (convertible Caddy, 60's Jaguar roadster, hand built Dusenberg, etc) because that's a whole different valuation system. These 911's seem to be becoming "collectible", sure, but no more than the Pontiac Fiero. The discussion boards seem to justify the outrageous prices not because of rarity or collectibility, but because THEY ARE SUCH INCOMPARABLY WELL BUILT, WORLD CLASS SPORTSCARS. Offhand, I cannot think of another car that mirrors the thoroughly illogical way these are valued. How in the name of capitalism did such a fair-to-middling footnote, a relatively technologically uninspired and significantly flawed 80's "sportscar" become so mind-boggingly VALUABLE???? ![]() 1987 Porsche 911 | Hagerty |

Really?
Look at an e30 M3 or an Alfa GTV 2000 (1970-74). Look at the prices of late 70's to 90's Ferrari's. 308's and 328's were cheap a few years ago, they've had a double in value too. Lets not call them high performance cars by todays standards either. Same can be said about all the "features" on a 308/328 too. Even the 348 which is universally unloved has seen a bump in price. The AC in a 308 or 328 is about on par with the one in a 911 of the same vintage. Are people really buying these cars for the "features" like AC ? I dont think so. There are all kinds of cars which were relatively cheap for a long time that have had serious upticks in value. Maybe these 911's look overvalued because they were really undervalued when you could buy them all day long for $25k. How many other cars have the lineage of these air cooled 911's? "Flaws" are in the eyes of the beholder..... what some people see as a "flaw" others appreciate for its uniqueness. If not, then buy a Honda of the same vintage. I am sure the AC works fantastic, and it has a great cruise control system and nice cup holders. Chrysler K car anyone? Hey it was dubbed the car that saved Chrysler.

Look at the pricing of any of that car's peers. Porsche is still a bargain. |
