Help with value for a 2006 Cayman S

A friend of mine has decided to sell his car. The car is one owner, it's his only Porsche.

Manual transmission, Arctic silver metallic with black standard leather.

I looked this over last night - as near as I can tell the paint and interior are flawless. The car has clear wrap over the nose and impact sufaces that was installed before he took delivery - even that appears to have no scratches. Wheels and sidewalls are un-marred.

Options are Bose surround sound, Automatic climate control, power seats with heat, painted wheel caps, Bi-xenon headlamps, PCM 2.1, Self dimming mirros and rain sensor.

The car has 11,000 miles on it.

All service was done at the dealer and he has full records.

So what is a good asking price for a car like this with such low miles, and essentially flawless?

KBB shows just over $30,000, but I'm seeing cars with much higher mileage asking at least a couple thousand more.

This is probably not the best board to get a precise estimate on a Cayman.

Well-driven Caymans 06-08 trading in the high teens. Low miles, well maintained in the low to mid 20s. 3-4k seem to separate the Base & S.

I see high-20s Caymans languishing for sale for months. The IMS cloud hangs over their heads, along with the 986/996 and early 987/997 cars.

The one you mention is exceptionally low miles, which makes it nice -- but also in the "too few miles" category that limits the financial bump for an otherwise uber low miles car. It is too new to be a museum piece -- and a 10 year old car with 11K miles is borderline neglected.

I think just over $30k is a fair target. Too much higher than that and you are getting into 2009 money, which gets you the 9A1 engine with no IMS bearing.

Do you have any suggestions for better places to look for values? I came here because Pelican is what I know.

I see cars for sale on the PCA and Rennlist. Most clean, low miles cars are listed well over $30K, but I certainly can't tell if they are actually getting that much money, or if they're just sitting on overpriced cars.

I don't dabble in the car market much - I bought my SC 21 years ago and helped my son find his 944 last year, but the other cars in my household have been there for 5-15 years.

I'd like to help him get what he can for the the car. We both realize that if the price is to high, the car will just sit on the market.

I suggested that he advertise the car here, on Rennline and on the PCA site. am I missing anyplace?

Asking isn't getting. That's a $30k car IMO.

Caymans do not have the same IMS problems as the older 911 and Boxster cars. But some cars still have an issue with it. However, it is an early car. I would say $28,000 from what I see here in San Diego.

Did I mention that I love the Cayman????? I think most folks do not realize that it is a super car. Porsche knows what they have.

You should head over to Rennlist. Even the GT3 guys are drooling over it. Huge discussions about it, and even a new GT4 forum. That video doesn't mention it, but they are doing a Cup Car version too.

I sold a 2006 Cayman S w/30k miles in August for $32k to the first person who came to look at it. Silver over black. Base model, so no sport wheel, no sport seats, no sport chrono but it did have nice 19" Carrera Sports. Paint was perfect except for a big scrape on the front bumper cover. The spread between pricing guides like NADA and KBB was huge...something like $25k on NADA to $32k on KBB. Obviously I found someone willing to pay the high end, but could have easily ended up selling it for $27k and done "ok".

IMO, owners on rennlist classifieds tend to be way too proud of their cars. often 10k or more over market.

Take a look on planet 9. That is ground zero for Caymans.

Although the rate of ims failure for Caymans and 987 in general is lower than earlier cars, the numbers and percentages are more matters of conjecture than fact. Porsche is pretty close mouthed about the whole thing, and they don't even know all the data once cards get beyond warranty.

Because it is so poorly understood, emotion and fear are major factors - so values are affected more than they should be. even for years that are supposedly less affected, or even immune.

There are some who claim extremely low miles cars are more susceptible than those driven regularly.

That is anecdotel, though, and I doubt there is any data to substantiate it.
