What`s a RUF R-50 50 6 speed 89 Turbo configuration worth?

This gearbox only has 8K (kilometers) on it. I`ve had it for about 17 years and the Yellow Rufized wide body 89 Turbo car. I got rid of the BTR motor years ago. Always working on other cars and keeping this one in the garage, so I still haven`t put it back together. Changed engine plans about a half dozen times. Currently I have a fresh 964 3.6 that was bored to 3.8. I put DC-2 cams in it and have a 993 varioram intake that will go on it with stainless (bigger) headers with a whole exhaust system from Timmons.

I`m thinking the turbo gearbox won`t be so great with the N/A engine (if I stick to this plan), so I`ve considered selling it. I`ve heard that in the day from RuF it was a 30k component new.

It's only worth what someone will pay.

VZ935 has one for sale right now in the teens...it's been listed for awhile and nobody has bought it.

Real, want-to-sell price would be a 4 digit number not a 5 digit number.

So if that is the case I might be inclined to keep it, for to replace it I`d need a G-50 5 speed. How much is that going to cost if I can find it? Perhaps better to keep the RuF 6 speed with the former rufized car than trade one for the other at 4 digits?

Years ago I put it on Yahoo Japan auction for a moment. Someone did come to look at it from Kyoto where there still is a Ruf dealer, but he backed out because he was looking for a R 50-51 (mine being an R 50-50). I guess the 50-51 was the race component and the 50-50 was a street component? I`m still in the dark about that.

I tried to research the one your talking about for sale i.e. VZ935 but I couldn`t find it. Could you direct me to that advertisment so I can compare notes?

A Ruf 6spd conversion isn't terribly special. The conversion is done with factory parts. I would take it apart, determine the ratios and maybe change a few. Might not even need regearing. A standard 993 6spd is actually a taller geared gearbox than a 993 turbo gearbox. Don't sell that without finding out what is inside.

Yeah, the turbo 89 was the only 5 speed as I know it, pre 89 all turbo were 4 speed right?? So the 89 speed G-50 would be the one to have on Turbo if that were my set up. Regarding the one post about the possibility of Ruf conversion on say gearing, I just wanted to say that this gearbox is stamped RuF on the case, has a Ruf badge on the bottom with R - 50 50 plus vin no. There must be info out there about a component like this. It wasn`t converted to Ruf spec, rather it was a Ruf component in the day.

The motor, gauges, everything about this car was Ruf from the time it was imported into Japan during the bubble economy. I read the chip from the Ruf engine computer and it was stamped, rather hand written 1991. So that is the era. The configuration though is G-50 esce i.e. 89. Even my Japanese title for the car reads RUF not Porsche, however, my vin no. on the chassy is not a Ruf no. rather a Porsche VIN. You all are going to laugh at me, but I still haven`t decoded that VIN. I still don`t know if it was a plain carrera, a turbo or a wide body non turbo. That is my task from now. Bear with me, yet realize I thank you all for your valuable insights and direction.

I apologize if I wasn't clear. I have no doubt that the casting says Ruf on it. Their 930 5spds were the same way. However the components inside of it are all factory parts that would be compatible with a 993 turbo.

That doesn't mean that you don't have a valuable gearbox. I should have more helpful in helping you place a value on it. A g50/50 in good condition is a $15k gearbox these days. A g50/50 6spd, Ruf or otherwise, is probably more like an $18-20k gearbox. However any smart buyer will want to know what is inside on something like that. Which takes us back to my original advice, which is to open it up, check what ratios it has, and then determine if you can use it or should sell it.

Thank you Matt for your generous insights! Been working and with time zones in Japan I don`t get to the forum everyday. Rather that pulling it apart to check the ratios, wouldn`t it be easier first of all to get onto RUF and ask them about the ratios via part no? One error in my last post was that the Ruf (green badge rivoted to the bottom of the case) read VIN no. Rather it reads part no. The model is read R 50-50 on the badge, but the part no is 0051. This must indicate it was the 51st part of X number manufactured.

Since my car was done at the Ruf factory with all components, including 3 4way switches on the front seats, it seems that they would give me the ratios and specs if I provided them with the VIN no. of the car they converted. Is there anyone who knows the contact of a person at the Ruf factory who could provide that info. or perhaps a Ruf forum that has English access. I`ve never tried to search for one because I thought they would be in German.
