Do people actually swap vehicles?

I've seen mentions in the past about people offering to trade their car (plus or minus extra cash) and was wondering if this ever really works.

The reason I ask is I am seriously thinking about selling my 964 C2 that I've owned for 5 years and moving into a 997.1S. I know all about the new cars lacking 'soul'
and I should own both for the best of both worlds but I'm looking for a change and I simply cannot justify owning 2 weekend cars.

2006-07 C2S's seem like a good vintage for a reasonable swap to happen.

Thoughts anyone?

Much Appreciated!

I have, twice. Traded my '68 911t for my '86 Carrera. And then traded an 85 Carrera for my '67 912.

It's too difficult to expect that you will find a car you like when the seller will also like yours. Why not sell and buy exactly the car you want from the whole available market, rather then the very small market of those who would trade?

I think you are probably right Jordan. I'm going to just post the car for sale and then shop for exactly what I'm looking for.

A *few* years ago I traded a '86 guards red coupe for a light yellow '72E Targa and enough cash to buy a '73T coupe. Those were the days!!

I have swapped motorcycles before both straight up and with some cash on either side of a trade. I had a number of offers for partial trades towards a longhood I was selling a while ago that I was ready to do, but the other person changed their mind both times. Ultimately found a cash buyer for it.

Irritating that most states charge both parties sales tax when you trade cars.

The new cars may lack "soul" but they sure are a lot of fun! My friends 2008 Cayman does not feel or smell like my 3.2 but I sure would rather drive it on a 200 mile winding road trip over my car. It is a blast!

Anyone have a hassle at the DMV when you have done a swap? I'm thinking of doing one in Calif.

Mine were both in Colorado. They actually allowed me to present a signed affidavit declaring it was an exchange and I didn't get gouged on taxes.

I would be shocked if California were as sensible as Colorado. Was wondering about the tax situation here as I had considered swapping for a Cayman.

I did my swaps in MN and only had to pay sales tax on the difference in price. I paid no sales tax at all on the even trades.

I traded a 73 911S and a 60 Roadster project for my driver Roadster about 10 years ago, great deal, and I still have the Roadster. I wrote about it in ESSES.

It's not Porsche related, but...

Somewhere around 1987 I bought a 1939 Pontiac 4 door for $500. It was really pretty sound, and ran, despite the price. After fooling around with it for a few years and dragging it from DC to Charlottesville, VA, I straight traded it for a 1965 Buick Skylark convertible.

Several years later I traded the Buick for a 1967 Fiat Dino Coupe. The Dino went with me to Denver when I moved out there. After a few more years I traded the Dino for a 1977 Lancia Scorpion that was straight, rust free and 100% original. After a few years with the Scorp I sold it for $4000 and bought this:

I think that $500 served me well!
