Value of Rollers
I've been searching for an upgrade engine/trans (3.0 or 3.2) for my '75 Targa project and have been considering buying a complete car, pulling the bits I need then selling the roller. I've seen several rollers for sale and wonder if these actually sell or would it take me months to find a buyer for it? So far I've found mostly SC targas that would make good candidates.
With the recent market craziness, what is the going price range for a complete (minus engine/trans) roller in fair/good condition assuming I don't want to hold onto it for 6-months selling it? Thanks in advance! |

A scruffy but intact 78-86 roller is probably in the 5-8k range, depending on the shape of the interior and panels -- this assumes someone has harvested the Fuchs and the Engine & transmission.
Maybe a little more if it was a nice car to start, but (almost?) no one is going to harvest an engine from a nice car in this market. There are enough wrecks around with serviceable engines. An intact, non-running parts car is probably ~$13k. Subtract $6-8k for the core motor and 915, and ~$1000 for the wheels.

Best bet is to buy a 2.7 for cheap (3500 or so) and find a mid year that has a 3.0 or 3.2. Spend a weekend, do the swap and sell the car as "more original" for maybe the same amount.
Shameless plug, I have a complete 2.7 I'd sell. |

Unless you could find an SC or Carrera for a song, I just don't see the math adding up. Taking the engine and gearbox out of the car will take 60% or more of the value away.

For reference, here is a guy selling a relative intact 1981 SC roller, still sporting polished Fuchs wheels, but not included in the sale:
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-used-parts-sale-wanted/859745-1981-911sc-rolling-chassis.html ![]() Rough but intact interior, faded paint, with some rust in the back -- likely from a failed rear window seal. Floor and most panels look solid. Salvage title may explain why it became an organ donor. Been for sale almost a month, starting at $8500, and now at $7500.

The roller would have to be complete minus engine/trans/engine harness for me to be interested. If this is something you want to pursue please send me a PM/email and let me know. A 3.2 in a lightweight mid-year car is a lot of fun! |

Thanks for chiming in everyone. This is helpful as I suspected that rollers are worth $5K-$8K. I've seen a few advertised for "complete car money" lately - there's one near me ad for $18K that looked like a really nice car but it's missing its Fuchs, engine and trans.
Scott - I'll let you know if I come across any G50 coupe rollers. I remember there was one near me but it looks like it sold a few months back. |
