That looks like a pretty badass junkyard to me! There's a Sunbeam Alpine, Austin Mini, 2002, Spitfire(s), Volvo PV, Spridget(s), MGB, TR3, TR4, a 67/68 Cougar, early Corvair, early Z, Fiat 124, and another longhood in the background among the junk. Regardless, too bad about the 911E.

I'm a little surprised it only sold for $17,800

What would a full professional resto cost? $60,000?

Is it worth 80K when complete? Probably.

Only a fool or a hack would undertake a restoration on a car like that and use a bunch of filler and bondo. Done right restoring that car is a 6 figure job with a ton of replacement sheet metal.

Is a resto of this nature really that expensive?
I know you would have to assume the worst and budget for replacing or restoring almost everything on the car but I thought that would still come in at under 100k.

Yes, if you don't save tens of thousands on labor diying. It is that expensive these days. It's part of why I say air cooled prices are not a bubble.

Wouldn't it just be easier to build one from scratch?

But then the vin wouldn't match the engine serial number.

There are many who say Seinfeld's early 901 isn't really the original car because it needed so much work. I've read estimates of $1/4M spent on that restoration.

One does sometimes need to ask when the car is really no longer the same car.

I'm guessing restoration would be >$200K. It would be a good marketing candidate for Restoration Design and their Galvanneal Process. They have lots of the parts that would be needed.

PS might be hard to justify the same chassis number

"Oh, it's Caesar's knife all right. The blade's been replaced three times and the handle twice, but it's completely original."
