The Quarter Million Dollar 993 Targa

I know eBay is not a very useful indicator of 911 values so please don't pile on - but for fun I've been watching the action (lack of) with 993's for the past few weeks and continue to be amazed/confused.

The prior auction for this car expired and it popped right back.

So I still have a chance? Or, maybe I should instead buy 3 or 4 regular 993's for the same $250K And this would be possible even at the "Buy it now" pricing of other current listings on eB.

Seriously, anyone has a right to ask anything they want for their cars and who am I to judge? But it's becoming pretty apparent to me that most of these auctions end with no sale. However, the high reserves and BIN prices keep getting even higher, it seems.

That said, here is one car with no reserve - so it will be interesting to watch:

Nice to see a seller who really intends to sell and is willing to trust the market to find the right price.

Ron

By this time next year, you'll wish you had bought that $250k Targa!! They aren't makin' any more and they will only go up, forever. The market's hot, boys!

But on a serious note, it's nice to see a genuine no-reserve auction. Those are rare these days. Most sellers aren't willing to sell at market value if it's not the market value they want.

I seriously doubt the Targa owner expects to sell it at that price. They are using ebay to advertise, phone number and email are posted, to strike a deal outside of ebay.

Exactly...which is against EBay listing policies. If they can strike a deal outside of EBay (by having potential buyers contact them directly), they can avoid their fees.

Auction reported.

I think you're right about not expecting to sell by auction - and the whole set up does look designed to circumvent the eBay fees if it does sell.

That said, if the seller is really trying to get phone calls, it's a curious strategy to ask 4 or 5 times the price of other Targas currently for sale (2.5x the next most expensive one on eBay)? Not sure who they expect to call - Russian billionaires who need a car to drive when in Vegas? I guess it could happen, and it is a very nice example, but I wouldn't be sitting watching for my phone to ring.

Just curious, why get involved? It has nothing to do with you. Not that I condone their actions, but just curious why somebody would get involved. Especially when in the whole scheme of things, it really doesn't matter.

To get people on car forums talking about the car, linking to the auction and attracting as much attention as possible...seems to be working well

That no-reserve '95 Cab sold for $35,250 with not much bidding action. Except for the person who upped their own leading bid 6 times in two minutes - elevating the price $4k all by themselves.

Now re-listed because "winning bidder wasn't serious" ?? Is that how eBay auctions work? I didn't think so.

I dont think Ebay auctions are in any way legally binding actually. At least not in Ebay Motors.

Bidder didn't do that. Ebay automatically ups your bid, up to your maximum when others bid.

Yes I know that. But in this case the bidder did actually place those 6 bids in 2 minutes. Looking at the bid history - with Show Automatic Bids turned on - this bidder was rapidly upping their bid and being informed they were not the highest (due to another bidder's prior max bid) So they were stop-hunting to finally get on top - $4K later.

Even though you don't often see this kind of run-up until the last minutes, this was probably a legit buyer - who stayed on top until the last minute when the winner who "wasn't serious" snatched the win. Which is lucky for the Seller - who otherwise would have had to let the car go for $35K-when the average ask for the 20 Cabs now on eBay is $57K (ranging from $40K to $90K)

Which brings us back to the original interest this no-reserve auction - to see what the market really is for one of these cars. Appears to be $35K for this one - which may be bad news for those asking well north of $50K - but we have another chance to find out when this renewed listing ends.
