Where do you look when shopping for a car?

When looking for a new project car or daily driver, which websites do you tend to look at first? I know craigslist and eBay are popular choices, but are there any others you gravitate towards? I'm looking to sell an older Porsche (1970). Has anybody had experience with Auto trader Classic or Classic Cars.com?

As a prospective buyer, I look at Pelican, PCA and Rennlist. I've cautiously started looking at Ebay but the noise to signal ratio is pretty bad there. I have a craigslist alert but not much good has come out of it. I do look at hemmings.com and autotrader classics on occasion, but the problem with those sites is that often you see cars that sold a while back but the ads still linger on.

I appreciate the input. I used to be fairly active on Rennlist and was a PCA member when we were a multi-Porsche family (used to have a Cayenne also), but haven't been active in either for a number of years now. I tried to list here, but it wasn't approved probably due to my lack of activity. I guess I need to do more posting and less lurking.

Always prefer dealing locally on CL. Avoid ebay, you never know who the 'buyers' are.

Both Rennlist and pano will charge you for an ad, but they are good places to list. The BaT auction is interesting because it is an actual auction that won't end until high bid is really reached. A new bid extends the auction end time.

I listed on craigslist last year without doing the research first and was overwhelmed and unprepared for the response. Big mistake on my part. I didn't realize a locally listed ad would get responses across the country. I had to pull the ad and figure out how to deal with potential out of state buyers needs such as payment and shipping. I think I have all that together now.

I bought my 911 on Craig's List 5 years ago. Worked out well for me. I have also used Autotrader with success.

I would definitely list it here first.

If that doesn't bring a buyer, Ebay is not a bad way to go -- if you consider it an advertisement and not an actual sales tool. List it on ebay at a retail price, or with a huge reserve, to get the exposure, and mirror it with a craigslist ad.

No matter what venue, the more thorough and better written the ad, the higher caliber of buyer you will attract. Hi def pictures, Bottom shots on a lift, pics of major rust points, readable images of major service receipts, etc.

I might go with my local PCA club magazine first. You'll get knowledgeable buyers who are..wait for it...local! The ads are usually free. I might even try my local Porsche Specialist. Amazing what $1000 bonus commission will get you!

The trick here is to know the real value before listing, as opposed to creating a bidding war here or elsewhere. When you're dealing locally, a host of potential problems go away.
