911 vs 912 hotrods and tributes..
These modified cars and tributes seem to be gaining in popularity, and I am wondering what difference does the actual chassis makes in price. I have been contacted by a few people that want to build them and join venture with our little dealership.
There is no doubt that the "hot rod" market favors cars that are the original long hood vehicles ('73 and earlier) .. But what about the difference between the 911 chassis vs the 912 chassis? To my best knowledge, they are the same.. So considering that these modified cars usually have a later model engine, it probably should make no difference money wise to the buyer if the chassis is 911 or 912, since the car can't really be completely brought back to its original. |

Would you rather have a hot rod built from a 911 or a 912? Yeah, a 911 - so a hot rod built from a 911 would cost more, imo.

A gentlemen up the road from our place just bought an R Clone Tribute made from an early 912 chassis for $95k! Quite stunning price, and supposedly he had to go into a bidding war vs other buyers. So who knows.. |

The number of cars in the market probably is a good reflection of the demand in the market place. No two cars will be the same so each cars individual value is set by the person who pays the number. Some may sit for months and others may sell quickly because of color, motor, interior or any number of smaller details. No one is banging out these cars one after another because the market is so small.

As for the 912 versus 911 question? So much depends on the parts and workmanship. If the car is done well using top notch parts whether it is done on a 912 or 911 chassis really shouldn't matter. With a SWB car starting with a 911 is automatically going to bump the cost of the project because the core car will set you back more. On a lwb it won't be as big a gap. '69 and '70 911t rollers are still pretty cheap.

Speedo's car is another great data point. On that car the purchase price basically gives you free labor. Thats kind of the crux. Pelican is larger diy. Many people here would never checkbook a build. As such the 68 is just a WTF? Price point to them. Completely different owner than the fish Mulsanne would be trying to hook. They are out there. You just don't find them here posting. If they are here they largely lurk.
