911SC panel gaps

I went to look at a 911SC Targa this morning and I would like to ask you about the body panel gaps: the gaps on both doors are consistent between driver and passenger, but they’re much wider than those on Nick's SC. At the widest point of the gap, I could almost fit my pinky finger. Driver door seem to sit slightly higher (a few mm) than the fender.

Did the door panel gaps on these cars come in all shapes and sizes, meaning even if it’s very wide it’s not a big deal, or should that be cause for concern? I'm sure a PPI would say that but I'd rather know before I pay the $500.

What's it look like when you look at the hinges? Was the car repainted and the doors rehung?

What about the rear floors and torsion tubes? If the targa tops leak they rust. If they rust the chassis flexes.

The paint has a lot of chips and blemishes so if it was repainted it might have been before the current owner. There was some kind of slight imperfection below the A pillar on the driver side, which unfortunately I didn't take a picture of. It between Nick and I we couldn't figure out if it was paint or metal. It was quite small so we didn't pay too much attention to it.

Didn't think of paying attention at the hinges unfortunately. Didn't put the car on a lift so I didn't get a good view of the underside, either.

Would your opinion be that gaps like those have some kind of story, and are unlikely to have come in that fashion from the factory?

Factory gaps would not have a "run" to them like that. They are even and consistent along the length of the door.

wow that is identical to my 1978sc, which has never had any body work. doors have never been off. my cars has bad latches with broken white plastic part on receiver. These issues are remediated with latch removal/replacement and realigning. if the structural metal rust they fold in. and narrow the top gap, not widen it. look to bad latches first

Mine look the same, on the rear of the door. Up front my gaps are a bit tighter. My car is solid but has been resprayed and the door rehung.

Disclaimer, I can change the width of my door gaps with my targa braces

I'd suggest stopping by the local buffet and recruiting a couple of 250# fellows that would like to sit in a 911SC Targa for a few minutes while you look at the door gaps.

Better yet a pair of 300#er's that would like to take a twisty bumpy ride in it for a day.

All seriousness aside, I'd look at the rocker panels to see if they have been replaced while the car was inappropriately lifted.
