Here a 951 you can't pass up

Is it my imagination, or is the asking price about $15k-20k too high?

Need to deduct a couple grand for that redonkulous "turbo" script on the right front fender, for starters!

Nice write-up, photos, and very detailed list of what's been done. Really clean, and with a sticker close to $50K (in '80s dollars no less) this was once very expensive car back in the day. Even has the window sticker. You rarely see them this nice. I don't know if he'll get it but it sure presents well.

What do you do with a car as nice as this, so well maintained and with paperwork? Give it away like other 944s are given away? No. It's a strange market, and this one represents a market segment that really isn't around. Interesting to see what happens. If you are into 944s this is the holy grail and lovingly maintained.

In Europe, the price would be right, perhaps a bit low, for an '88 turbo S in similar condition. This car has a nice colour and desirable sports seats.

Turbo S -prices have risen quite clearly. A couple of years ago one could buy mint Turbo S's for 15 k euro's all day long. Now they are easily double that.

Pelican -prices for 944 turbo's are very low. But same goes for other Porsches, Pelican forum is the best place to buy.

VERY clean turbo. May be a tad high--however if he is patient he might actually get the ask or close to it. I agree with the above--I think the 944 turbos are currently under-priced and will be the next P-cars to rise in value and we will all be saying "I remember when you could get these for sub-10K all day"

PS--the "Turbo" fender script is a factory piece--started on the Silver Rose "S" cars and was an option from that point on.

Well, since Porsche only built 62 Black Turbo "S"s in 1988, it does qualify as a rare car and the price isn't out of line, considering that, and the fact (unlike my old Black 88 Turbo "S") it hasn't been turned into a track car or modified.

Maybe that's true, but it doesn't make it worth triple of what other 951s are going for. the 944 and its iterations have low pricing because that's what the market is. Yeah, the days of nice sub-$10k 951s are gone, but when you can still get them in decent shape for under $20k, you'd REALLY have to want this one to make that price happen. "Rare" really really great and all, but "rare" doesn't imply "collectors item". Sure, these watercooled cars might jump in price, but their lowly brethren are still on the college-kid circuit. And that means that the preponderance of crap ones drags down the average price. Even for ones that aren't crap.

928's can range from $1000 for a neglected heap to $100.000 for a pristine GTS. Why should it be any different for the 924/944/968 series?

I joined Pelican Parts forum in 2003. That journey has taken me from a 66 912 that I hotroded with 2.7, to a 73RS clone , to a PCA GT race car , 993C2S, ClubSport with a 3.8,Spec 911 Race car and it was then that I reilized that if I really wanted to learn to drive and learn racecraft that the 944 was the platform. The reason was the balance of the car. Fast forward I now have 2 Spec 944 race cars and thrir own garage at Thunderhill raceway Park in California, 2 944 turbos and the coolest being a 924S "Special Edition".
I am not going to go out on a limb and say the 88 944 turbo is a better car than an 88 911, but I will take one any day for my own reasons. I know the market for the 944 price wise I think the 35K car is just a little early but rock solid Porsche driving platform from one of the best years Porsche built cars.

Well, you clearly don't know the difference between a regular 88 951 and 88 Turbo "S", guess you feel that a 1988 Carrera CS isn't worth anymore than your 88... And the FACT, that some of the rarer 951Ss have sold, at auction for big bucks proves that rare does in fact equal collector car when only a handful were built and they were really that good.
How good, ask anyone who has owned & driven one, but has driven other "fast" cars too.

You're a bad guesser.

The claim that rarity = collectible just isn't true. You can claim it all you like, but that won't make it true. Slantnose 930s are rare, but very few people consider them collectible. Yes. the S models are better. Yes, this is a good 951 example. Yes, not many were made. All that might make for a higher price, but each yes doesn't add $5000. I guess we'll see. (A better guess than you made.)
