Started by yours truly as he was trawling eBay looking for a reasonably priced SC in good shape. The ratio of disgraceful defilings over legit cars was quite bad, so one day when I stumbled on that motormeister one at the top of the thread I realized the world needed to know what was going on .

Ah, those good old days!

The big regret I have is not doing screenshots with the posts. Some timeless gems are now forever lost...

So ...

just humor me for a minute. Let's pretend we get to hop into a time machine and go back to the late 80's pre-internet days. When a number of 911 longhoods had been updated (fuglified as we now so confidently state with 20/20 hindsight) to impact bumpers, side strakes, flatnose "conversions", you name it. And potential buyers probably held their noses in disgust, while there were plenty of unmolested examples to choose from. Fast forward to today where every ratty 911 roller or failed "longhood update" with undocumented history and in need of major work seemingly rides the FOMO wave and gets snapped up. How perceptions change.

Not defending the seller here, nor do I have the slightest idea what outdated 3-pointed star vehicles are worth and even less of an idea about the future prospects for these cars. And yes the mods do the car a major disservice, as does the hilarious ad copy. Nor does that car appear to be an actual AMG-engined car but I find it interesting to think about how contemporaries might have judged longhood mods 20 - 30 years ago and how those opinions might have changed in the face of scarcity.

At some point (maybe not now) it may be worth the time and $ to someone to put this car back to stock and enjoy it for what it was advertised as when new - a highly competent, comfortable, ultra-luxe cruiser.
