964s - Trying to understand the current market..
I just sold a 1993 964 C2, and was quite surprised at the vast amount of interest on this car. When pricing the car, I had a very little to compare it to but I think the price was friendly, but not too low.
This is the first 964 I sold at our small dealership (not counting RS America we had) and I was just wondering if the demand for these coupes are going vastly up? Couple of years ago, the market was all about the 993s and everyone put the 964 models aside for their known engine problems. I wonder if the market is shifting.. I looked all over the internet, and it's very hard to find the later 964 coupe models. The early ones are around, but those supposedly are prone to some issues and not as sought out as the later '92 & '93 cars. I also wonder if the C2 are more popular than the C4 since there seem to be more of the 4-wheel drive cars around for sale? The bottom line is that the later 964 coupes are closing in on the price of the 993 coupes and it's a bit baffling. Any thoughts? |

If any of us knew what the hell the market were thinking, we'd be in comfortable retirement. LOL. The 964 was always kind of a stepchild in the aircooled world, plus got a bad rap from the early models. Folks didn't like the body treatment, etc., etc. But like the whole rest of the aircooled world, prices for those cars (and the turbo models) just exploded. Heck, I just looked at a midyear car that has a $37k ask. It wasn't too long ago you could get a runner under $10k. I guess everyone has to have a Porsche these days.

I've been following the 964 market for quite sometime. C2 Coupes are fetching good money right now. Supply and demand since the majority of them have been neglected for so long it's hard to find good examples. The C4's AWD system is expensive to fix and of course doesn't handle as well so they are not as thought after.
If you can find a clean 92 - 94 C2 with less than 50k miles, expect to pay over $60k. They drive allot like a 993 but with the classic 911 look. Also Singer/RWB and the new Magnus vehicle has created allot of interest. Last edited by specialtyoneinc; 12-01-2015 at 01:51 PM.. |

I just sold my 93 C2 5spd coupe in driver quality for a bit over 60k US. I realize its a slightly different market here in the UK but it was sold within 48 hours and I knowingly left money on the table by pricing aggressively. The thing I love about the 964 is that it keeps the silhouette of the original 911, save the bumpers, but incorporates many of the improvements of the 993 without the melted styling. It hits the sweet spot between nostalgia and drivability. The later cars have all the improvements and the lowest, by a wide margin, production so, of course, command higher prices. If I weren't in a temporary living situation, there's no way I would've ever sold that car. I intend to look for another 964 when I get back to the US.

964 C2 Coupe manual transmission = strong money
As others have said, the restyling treatment to the bumpers turned a lot of people off when they first came out. Me included. I guess it's an acquired taste......25+ years acquired for most people it would appear. Now that we have all had two and a half decades to absorb the restyling, the cars have come into their own. Last of the hand built cars, last air cooled with the classic silhouette, best balance between old and new, and so on. They are fantastic cars and I suspect they will continue to go up and outpace the 993 in the long term. Just my opinion.

There is a 1999 here locally which looks pretty clean for about 12 grand. Maybe I should pick it up! But personally they are my least favorite of the whole line up. I'd still drive one though if I had to ![]() |

They've already passed the 993s.
I think the mania right now is due to the fact that the guys with collections are snapping them up to look like they've been knowing what fantastic, and special cars they are. Sounds like everybody here knows why - last of the classic styling with just enough a taste of the future. They're different than the ones that preceded and the ones that came after (fanboys like myself say better). Production numbers were low. Lots of special parts, and the only one in the classic skin that came from the factory with all the hot-rod stuff people do when building their "ultimate" 911 - stiffer chassis, coil overs, giant brakes, high compression, big displacement, twin plug, etc.. I think this spike we've seen is just the beginning. Or I could be totally wrong and it's just a temporary spike thanks to Rob and Magnus. I cashed out of mine the other day. '92 C2 coupe, manual, good but "worn-in" condition (basically great shape but showing it's 156k miles) - sold for $45,500 within 5 hours of placing the ad and I'm positive I left money on the table. I'm reccommending owners sit on em if they don't have to sell. I sold for a lot of reasons, but I'm getting back into one as soon as I can. Special cars. My old car, just because: ![]() |

Yes the 964 coupe seems to have less numbers in the marketplace, or maybe less numbers manufactured than 993's? Could be contributing to the push in prices, but I have to say I do not like the fat bumper look and would much prefer an 84-49 as the true porsche classic look. When looking at a 964 i approach the term "ugly".
Opinons are plentiful no doubt. |

I helped my uncle sell his very low mileage '94 coupe about 3 years ago and he was thrilled to get $31k...about 2k more than he bought it for 10 years before that.
He tried to get me to buy it, but I dont really put premiums on low mileage cars. My son's college fund would have received a huge bump if I had :/

964 has the most aggressive look, the lowest production numbers, abs, power steering, airbags and the classic lines. What's not to like?

'92 Cobalt for me...
From the perspective of a first time 911 buyer (me), the 964 was the best choice.
As said, last of the classic body style, but with modern features. Air bags, antilock brakes and excellent AC system. I actually prefer the bumper style over the earlier Carreras. Smoother, more aerodynamic. Also small oil leaks don't bother me. I am a long time Alfa Romeo owner so it's no big deal ! ;^) ![]() ![]() ![]() |

![]() I like the 964's styling for all the reasons mentioned - maintains the classic look but adds modern conveniences. If I stare at the fat front bumper for too long, it does start to look a bit ungainly, but the overall impression of the car's lines is still a good one. |

Very limited supply here in Canada. A few dozen 993 coupes for sale and hardly any 964 manual coupes.

Don't forget Singer and other hot rodders in Europe have also bought a bunch to convert. I would guess globally at least a couple of hundred have been converted to hotrods or are sitting in warehouses about to go under the knife.
