Price range for a hotrod 911

What are your thoughts as to the value of a street quality 1971 911 coupe, no apparent rust, deep sixes, with a 3.2L short stroke built on a 3.0 case. Motor is a high quality build with SSIs, etc. have no photos but have seen the car in person.

There is some miss information given to you. If you 'short stroke' a engine you will lose displacement, so a 3.0L will become a 2.7 or such depending on how much stroke of the crank is removed.
When Porsche made the 3.2 the engine got a longer throw crankshaft it was "stroked' to gain 200cc of displacement.
With out pictures, more information, it could be anywhere from 30k to 50k on price.

Factory 3.2 long stroke or hotrod 3.2SS?

A 3.0 with larger 98mm (vs. 95mm) pistons is commonly referred to as a 3.2 short stroke (SS)

The later factory 3.2 was the same size pistons but longer stroke crank (as ficke stated)
So the question to ask is, was this motor a bored out 3.0, or did it start with the later case and crank.

If they said 3.2 short stroke, these are commonly known as a bored out 3.0 to get 3.2, and that is a 3.2 SS.
The short stroke 3.2 formula is a fantastically exciting power plant for those who love high RPMs (and they still retain really good torque down low).

In any event, back to the question. What is a hot rod worth?
Hard to say but anything long hood has pulled big price numbers.

Also of note is that even long before the market jumped, a full on race car could sell for as much as $65k for a well sorted mid year. In tough market years maybe $30k for the same car to a racer.
I realize that the race car market and the hotrod street market are different markets, and people place different values on the same things though. Yours is a long hood though so that becomes interesting.

My personal opinion is that, for the right buyer looking for a driver versus a museum piece, the loss of collectable value is replaced by the improve usage value. for anything under $100k, and a good long hood can be made original again one day if the market makes sense.

The car had just come in the shop and was up on a rack so I could only see the underside. The mechanic was going through it and getting it ready for sale. We were just chatting so I know I did not have all the facts and he may have still been discovering. I am not a buyer but with how I described it I found it difficult to value it. Me guess was between $45k and $65k in its current condition. Without the numbers matching engine it seems like a great RGruppe car. Currently a true sleeper. Somebody is going to get a really fun long hood!

Larry sold his on bring a trailer. Similar hot rod. You could search there for it. 1973

Jeremy sold his 74 there as well.

Two good cars for comparison

Bigger Pistons in a 3.0 will make a 3.2 short stroke if 70.4mm stroke is maintained from the 3.0. Increased displacement but commonly referred to as 3.2ss

Makes sense.
66mm cranks were 'the' short stroke in my old thoughts, but a 70.4 is a shorter stroke than the 3.2's 74.4mm so making a 3.2 with bore is a "short stroke" 3.2, compared to the way the factory did it.
Learned a new name today. It is a good day.

They are great engines. Same engine is supposedly in my 74 but I have no sure way to verify until it needs a rebuild some day.

I'd say a car like this 70 would be in the $40-50k range.

I agree with Matt around $45k, but a lot of swing depending on paint and rust.

Really hard to say without details. If there
Are a lot of period correct details the sky's the limit
for price. If it a solid driver then 45-55k tops

One more hot rod worthy of note (think of it this way - price a fully loaded minivan before you criticize these prices).

This car was built by an active Pelican member. The entire build was well documented here. It is really a fantastic car.

Can't buy a well-finished car like that for less than $60K. And if you do, let me know and I'll make you a fat profit selling it on.
