I own a 911 so I can be second-guessed by everyone on every 911 forum ever.

The best thing about rising values is your ability to tell your partner that the car is an investment -- which then justifies buying more "investments" and putting extra money into the "investment" -- just don.t sell the damn thing, it has to be drivin to maintain its integrity.

Porsche owners: the only subset that complains/whines about owning an appreciating asset?

Butt, I wonder if the owners of other expensive marks (Ferrari, Lambo, Mercedes, ect.) actually drive their high-$ vintage cars or do they just park them in the garage, look at them occasionally, and high-five fellow owners about their market successes (something plenty of 911 owners are being tempted to do, it seems)? :) |

For how many years did people buy another $6-10k 911 instead of spending that amount to rebuild the engine? It's cost close to 5 figures to rebuild an engine pretty much from 1995-2010. Only in the last 5 years has it gone up even more. So there were all these neglected rough cars running around and guys would buy 2 or 3 of them for parts. They don't really know how good they had it is my take. And if you whine about the fact that is over now it suggests to me that you made the mistake of selling your stuff and are now bitter that you can't afford to buy it back. So blame the guys with more money who are willing to buy and maintain them now. I paid $1000 for my first 911, a 70T. I sold it for close to $10k. I would buy it back for that in an instant right now at that price. I'd probably buy it back for twice that price and still be happy. Just because we had it really good at one point does NOT mean that now we have it bad. As for too expensive a car to drive? Freaking Camrys and Accords cost $25-30k new these days. If my $30k 911 is too expensive to drive then there's something wrong. After nearly 6 months I take delivery of my 74 Coupe in the next 2 weeks. I cannot wait to drive and flog that sucker!!! |

The Subaru in my signature is also technically hers. I sold mine 8 years ago to help buy our first house. Ever since then her car has been my DD. But then she gets to run around with the kid in a brand new 2016 Subaru OB so she's not complaining. |

There are plenty of nice driver 911's available for less than $30k- I can't see that hobby has been ruined. I've got a 76 turbo that is going through a full resto- I would never had done that when car was worth $30k. The fact that you can restore the right car and not be upside down when done is good not bad.

We saw it with the 356. We saw it with the longnoses with the infamous run in values 7-8 years ago. And now we are seeing it with IB cars and 964/993s. When the cost of major maintenance costs a certain price the values of rebuilt cars have to follow. And when so many of them start to need $10-20k in rust repair and paint the rust free original paint cars are going to start carrying a premium. |
Amen brother. Thats why I bought a driver quality 911. To drive, fix, mod and play with it.
BTW U in the desert? Tucson here |

Fast forward - today the Carrera is worth more than I paid for the Golf new, to say nothing about its value today. Yes, I still drive the 911 regularly, including to work at least once a week. The nice bit is I can spend whatever money I need to on the Porsche, and not be underwater on it! As long as I am reasonable about my changes and updates, I'm not going to get hurt on it. Which is a far different deal from previous play cars I've had. |

Gaspassin, I'm up in northern Colorado. Technically it's still high desert, but not what most think of when they think desert. Here's a shot of the 200+ head elk herd I encountered yesterday while running at about 6500ft. When I first ran up on them they were 50ft uphill of me on the trail. Then they stampeded into the valley and up onto the opposite ridge. This is in a burn zone where a lightning strike in 2008 took out about 5000 acres. Mostly yucca, sage and a few cacti now that the trees are gone. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1451875029.jpg |

Ronnie, once again thanks for carrying on the humor in the New Year. I have to say every time I log in I wonder 'What's Ronnie gonna post today?' Classic stuff. Nice to mix it up from concrete Porsche talk.

I was out of town for a week and a half for Christmas and the first thing I did when I pulled into my garage in the other car was get in the 911 and just sit in it and smile. I still regularly go to the garage just to look at it. So...I think I own a 911 because I freaking love it. :)

Ha ha, CountD, glad you enjoy the asshattery!:D There sure are some hilarious guys that post in the various Pelican forums and it's fun to sling in kind knowing that their feathers won't get ruffled.

I have pondered this question myself. For me, all cars (well the cool or old ones anyway) have soul. Not all speak to me, but I can generally appreciate anything interesting and see why someone would be emotional about it.
This is my first 911, and its far from the fastest car I have owned, it may now handle the best (but it didnt stock)nothing for it is cheap, but everything for it (save the CIS) is simple and much if it lacks elegance. The transaxles are almost a shame. But, I think ever since I heard my first 911 screaming at full song, there was something about the flat six that spoke to me. Even stock they sound great and are willing partners for any spirited drive. With the addition of the new exhaust, there is nothing as intoxicating as the sound. That said, SCs have been climbing in value steadily and I wanted in before they, too, soared out of reach. I didn't buy it as an investment, but I have kept the value of the car in mind when modifying it, and I bought it right. Since I go through cars like underwear, none of my friends would be surprised to see me sell this car in 6-9 months. But I think this one might just be a keeper..Like my 58 Mercury hardtop wagon...just something about it My $.02 |

Should I mamby pamby around like folks did with the guy who was furious about people coming to his door to ask if his car was for sale or should I just put that kind of issue to bed by being Mr. Bad Touch? I provided that member an opportunity to rethink his stance, if I remember correctly. I think we can call it a correction. Pushing my Luck? Where might he be? Why is that? Ask Mr. Bad Touch. Pleco who I loved dearly. Gone. Mr. Bad Touch. |
