Why do you own a 911? warning 'rant'.

Many time in these threads about price rising on the various 911, people will respond with a "better sell my ------- because one sold for xxx" Makes me wonder why they own it in the first place. Do they have to sell their house because it goes up in value? You will still need a place to live. Nice when your assets go up but that does not mean you have to sell, unless it is an investment vehicle more than than a transportation vehicle/toy?
All work and no toys will make you a very dull/mad boy wondering what the point of it all is.

If you need the money or there is another car you would rather have, yeah sell. but other wise why? Is not the car you want worth keeping?

Another one I do not get is "I do not drive my ----- because it is worth so much now"
Well insure the car for what it is worth and drive it! Many people believe here Hagerty will let you insure it for way over it's real value, well take advantage of them and make your self comfortable and drive the car.

Porsche sells new cars that are worth more than a lot of our cars and the people who buy new cars drive them? why not the used car worth a fraction of the new one?
I know people who are afraid of driving their SC because it is worth "so much" now but drive their new BMW that they paid more for than the 911 and the BMW is still worth more than the 911, but they are afraid to drive the 911??

New year reflections.....Rant over/

I was thinking the same thing while taking a 150 drive this morning with a few friends. I hope to put another 100,000 miles on my Targa in the next 10 years.

They are meant to be driven, old or new😎

Eh I get why people sell or stop driving them.
First if you buy a 72s 10 years ago for $16k you can afforde to loose the car with little personal risk, you can also replace that car for little money- if you crash that car today (let's say at a track) it's not very easy to find one and the $150k it takes to replace it is a huge risk.
Not to mention- you could sell that 72s today and buy
A 2006 Cayman, and a 2011 cayenne gts and a 81 911 sc and a Porsche 968. And a 996 turbo, and a 996 carrera and a 914 and a Honda Accord- not one of the- but all of them! What set would you enjoy more?

I love my sc- it was a lot more fun to race when it was worth less than $15k. That said it now has no interior, a cage and a 3.6, I still race it and couldent replace it fir less than 60k but she will still see the track. I just get why values going up make people want to sell

That is why I bought a 85 Carrera with 133,000 miles on it and not restored! It will never be worth a lot and it is fun to drive and reliable and I can tune it! I'm not afraid to drive it because my Wife's Honda CRV is worth a lot more!! If by some magic it does become valuable I will have a nice 2009 Cayman in my garage.

Excellent rant thar, ficke, and as you know, I always mouth off about the very same thing. These are fookin' cars - I personally don't give two ****s about the rising values, "gotta keep it stock and low miles (or just swap out the speedometer with a low mileage one, and/or roll the odometer back) because that's where the money's at" yada' yada' yada', with regard to driving/modding my car. If I was gifted an ultra-low mile, 1975 930 I would mod and drive the stones off that thing too (would have to be a gift because I sure couldn't afford to buy one ).

Don't know if you saw this in the Turbo forum a week or so ago, but a guy over there (think it was in the POTD thread), posted pics of his car, fresh out of a shop, and said that some magician mechanic had worked on it an it was running and driving like a scalded ape - he then proceeded to say "looks like it's time to sell". I was thinking "say what"?!?! I don't get it, and like you said, why buy one of these fookin' things in the first place? Bunch of automotive limp Richards hereabouts, I tell ye'!

Dude I like your commentary , but ain't nobody gonna mod a low mile 75 930 these days. You could sell it and go beat up 10 996 turbos !!

I love the cars, but I have issues It seems as soon as I finish modding one to the way I like it i get bored and sell it, lost money on them too.
That said, I just got a 68 912 and it'll keep me busy for quite awhile. Sincerely doubt I sell this one anytime soon, I've learned my lesson: there's always something else that can be done

Ha! Probably a bit too much hyperbole on my part! BUTT, I wouldn't want one of those slow, little engined, non-intercooled, wimpy brakes, and tiny wheeled wanna-be Turbos as a driver anyway - I'll leave the 75s for the poser poofter types to enjoy ("enjoy" looking at, that is)!

Have no idea what others do with their cars but I just got back from a New Year's drive on a clear and quiet night. I hear the roar of the engine, the grip of the tires and the rush of the wind. The controls turn buttery smooth after 15-20 min and you feel connected to the machine. Just awesome.

If someone crashes into my classic 911, I can't just take the insurance payout and buy one just like it the next day. Have you tried to look for a car just like the one you own, recently?

If someone hits a modern BMW or a 991, I can go online and order an identical one the same day.

The selling because the values go up I do understand. There are a lot of car guys that like a variety of cars, not just one marque/model and do not have unlimited funds and storage space to own 5, 10, however many cars. Having one that goes up a lot in value that they've already spent some time with might allow them to get into another "bucket list" car for a while that might have been previously inaccessible.

Now the not driving them because they go up in value on the other hand...

Later,
Wally

One of the cool things about this site and the people on it, is by and large you are here because you bought parts from our host and work on your car and drive it, true enthusiast, I like it and that is why I am here.
But once in awhile I lose focus and some time others do to and get caught up in this notion they are investors now with their car and not Porsche enthusiasts.

Yeah, you cannot insure track cars, times change and Porsche are no longer the cheap track weapon so racing them got more expensive, but there are other cheap track cars.

Yes, it will be hard to find one exactly like the one you had if there was a need to collect on insurance but, I have had over 11 911's and driven many more, they are all fun in their own way. you will have a new experience in a similar car. Life will move on and so will the fun.

I think what Ronnie has been saying, in his own unique way, is it is your car, do what you like with it, drive it, and do not try to out guess what some future owner wants. ( is that right Ronnie?)

Bottom line, we own these cars to drive them, the rising value is cool for the wife or if you need money in an emergency, etc. but let's not let it dictate what we do, and control are fun with the cars.

I totally agree. And I'll tell you, a Turbo S Cayenne is the new black . I just bought another one. 19 grand for 521 hp - I'm gonna beat upon that thing in till its last day. It's pure fun ! There is zero resale value so just keep enjoying !

I also have this issue!! Different car, but the same scenario!! 17 years ago I bought an ALFA Montreal for 17K, completely original as it is today. Now GOK what it's worth? Less than 3800 made and I got 1. Very nervous to put it on the road at this point. I drive all my other ALFAs, but not this one.

Montreals are sweet. And very rare. Problem is, if you crashed or got this one stolen you probably couldn't replace it. There are very few over here.

What the heck is an Alfa guy doing on here anyways? Post a pic.
