Opinions- convert a sportomatic to a 5 speed?

Is it worth the time and money to do this? I came across a 76 911 targa with a sportomatic but not a fan and would rather have a 5 speed. It sounds like the sportomatic might not be functioning properly- owner says it won't stay in reverse. How low would the price on a mid year have to be to make this swap make sense? There is upside to the car- low miles, seems to be well taken care of, and no rust. Had a windows out respray in its original color as well.

Sporto cars are now seen as oddballs that are arguably worth more than their MT equivalents. If it really is a low mileage rust free example you would be taking several thousand away from what it is worth while spending several thousand to convert it. Least expensive option, value-wise and out of pocket, would be to find a good shop to repair the gearbox.

Sell the car and buy one with a 5 speed. Hopefully you will find a buyer.
As far as sportos being worth "arguably more than their MT equivalents" I disagree.

We can argue about it. That's what arguably means.

But what I don't think is arguable is that he'll spend more to replace it with a 915 than he could resell the car for in the next few years when he adds it on top of his purchase price.

If I found a Sporto and wanted to keep the car for a while, I'd swap in a 915 but keep all of the Sporto parts for the next owner. I think this would increase the value of the car as it'd make it much more appealing to the masses and if the next person wanted to, they could always go back to the orginal.
