Car in the US with only a European title?

I talked to a gentleman today who said a relative of his would be interested in selling his 911. He told me about the car and then said it is still on its European title. If I'm understanding him correctly- the car was imported into the US but was never registered/titled here. Is this even possible? If he is correct and the 911 only has a European title what kind of cluster would it be registering it here in the US?

1) Yes, it is possible because it was never registered in the USA so therefore there would be no USA title.

2) This is not a big deal. Depends on your DMV who may or may not have seen such a thing but these things happen every day because you have to remember that every car that comes into the USA doesn't have a title - even if it's new. The dealer always handles this. A car doesn't come standard with a US title - how could it? What state would it be in?

3) In my previous life, I had been involved with an import company on getting titles for Ferraris that come into the country back in the '80s and '90s. For most states this is not a problem. Most of the people at the DMV just say 'Oh, I haven't seen one of these before...'

4) This is not a hurdle. However it may help you in getting a better deal by bargaining with the seller.

5) The only time THIS WOULD BE A PROBLEM is if the 911 were 25 years or NEWER and it was not brought up to snuff with EPA or DOT compliance. So if it were a 993 you were looking at, or a later 964, this would be an issue. You could get around this, but it would be too much of a hassle and it would be illegal.

That's what I wanted to hear. I have never imported a car before- and yes I know they all would have a foreign title- I was afraid part of importing process was that you had to register it in the US in a certAin amount of time. Thanks for the info!

many years ago we tried to export a 1960s VW with Mexico title to Japan ,

US customs would not accept the Mexico title ( no way to verify maybe) but made us get a USA title ( California since we were there)

No idea how it is now

Now when you export they hold it for a few days while they run the title to see if it is stolen. You have a to have paperwork to prove that it is yours.

As long as you're not trying to register it in California it's not a big problem. Cars >= 25 years old are exempt from DOT safety requirements in 50 states and EPA requirements in 49. Customs will want to see the import papers to prove federal import tax was paid though, so if this was done long ago and never registered and those papers are lost then that would be a concern.
