If they auctioned the mclaren chassis from Senna's first championship, how much do you think that would bring?

All of the Artcurial results, minus a bunch of Citroens to allow it to fit the 10000 character limit here. (Beautiful catalog of the cars: Rétromobile 2016 by Artcurial Motorcars by Artcurial - issuu )

Let's beat a dead (prancing) horse a little more:
When Artcurial sold a historically significant, ex-works Ferrari 335S for 32,075,200 euros (now, $35.6 million) at its Paris auction on Friday, February 5, it was quick to point out that the car had set a new world record price for a Ferrari at auction. Its headline, however, came with a caveat, and while the 1957 Ferrari 335S, chassis 0674, is now the most expensive Ferrari ever auctioned in euros, it falls second in U.S. dollars to the 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO that sold at Pebble Beach in August of 2014 for $38.115 million dollars. Blame it on a stronger dollar and a weaker euro. The Ferrari 335S sold last week achieved a fee-inclusive winning bid of $35.6 million, based upon a published exchange rate of $1.11 per euro. In August of 2014, one euro was worth $1.34, meaning that the $38.1 million 1962 Ferrari 250 sold for the equivalent of 28.5 million euros, or roughly 3.5 million euros less than the Ferrari 335S sold last week.
Other lots in the top-10 at Artcurial’s Paris sale included a 1963 Aston Martin DB4 convertible, which sold for €1,473,200 ($1,635,252); a 1986 Ferrari Testarossa spider valeo, once owned by Gianni Agnelli, which sold for an auction-record €1,210,000 ($1,343,100); a 1903 Moonbeam III yacht “Moonbeam of Fife,” which sold for €1,107,100 ($1,225,551); a 1972 Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona, which sold for €953,600 ($1,058,496); a 1995 Bugatti EB110 SS “Sport Competizione – Le Mans,” which sold for €941,700 ($1,045,287); a 1995 Bugatti EB110 Super Sport, which sold for €929,800 ($1,032,078); 1931/2012 Bucciali – Cord Type L29 modified, which sold for €596,000 ($661,560); a 1960 Maserati 3500 GT vignale spyder “Capot Long,” which sold for €548,300 ($608,613); and a 1968 Ferrari 330 GTC which sold for €536,400 ($595,404).

Porsche results from Russo Steele seem unubtainable. I can't figure out how. Common, you savvy info seekers, anyone going to crack this? Lots of interesting Porsche's were auctioned including two 76 930's. Would be nice to factor prices attained with the other 2016 Arizona auctions.

pu911 02-11-2016 11:57 AM

I received an email with R&S results, neither 76 930 sold based on info I got.

Here is the thing. Seems all these guys want to complain and say they made 15,000 3.3 930s so they aren't that rare. They made 10,000 Testarossa's.. Keep in mind that probably less than 10,000 3.3 930s remain. I'm sure the Testarossa didn't suffer near the attrition rate. What I'm saying here is this is another case of a "We hate Porsches at auction". This is a world of billions and billions of people. The collector car market is going to be equal to the art, antiquities market. Not today, tomorrow, but it will and air-cooled Porsches will be desirable.

Feel free to correct me but I believe they only made about 7,000 Testarossas and were under $50k at one point.

Yep...just a couple of years ago a NICE Testarossa could be had for $50K all day long

Point number 3 and 4 are ones I need to memorize:

Summary of lessons learned this week:
1.Make sure you know the difference between a collector car and a used car.
2.Put your used car on eBay, Craigslist, or sell it to a used car dealer and save yourself the aggravation.
3.Buy what you like and hope it goes up in value; if it doesn’t at least you have something you will enjoy to drive.
4.The true collectors don’t care if the car market goes up or down; they collect the rarest, which, in turn, is the most coveted.

I think they're speaking in relative terms. Even Testarossas (and other modern Ferraris that have seen generous spikes in value lately) aren't exactly rare when compared to the vintage Ferraris, Lambos, 959s, etc. that have typically been the "true" collector cars.

techweenie 02-12-2016 06:09 AM

I was at a small gathering last Sunday in Malibu and a guy drove in in a 1938 Alfa, which we all gathered around and admired. I fired off a photo to a collector friend who informed me the owner/collector has turned down an offer of $38 million. That same collector friend I called has a 67S and has turned down multiple offers over $400K. The takeaway, for me, is that not all cars are on the market.

What we are observing via auction action is a small part of the market - the publicly traded cars. They aren't the whole story.

And that 'Did Someone Yell "FIRE?" article is the best I've read post- Scottsdale. thank you, Phil for the link.

Just under 10,000 total production of 9,939 and there is not that big of difference between 10,000 and 20,000 when are talking car production.

Would you then predict that Alfa to hit $38mil at auction, and the 67S $400k?
