Please help me figure out if this is a good buy
https://www.cars.com/vehicledetail/detail/653316152/overview/#modal-photoModal
So a bit about me, im in the military, stationed in germany. I just sold my 73 charger, and was looking to replace it with a 68 charger. Though in my search i came across a few old porsches, and figured i give them a look (always wante a porsche, almost bought a 996 tt, and then later almost bought 997tt, but always went with something else... M3's, z06's and now a c7 stingray). Anyway, i dont know much about old porsches, and dont know values, ive seen them all over the place. I love it that this one is wide body and the color combo. Dealer didnt give much more info than whats in the add, except he said a few service were done recently ($3k in receipts), and that the car was tracked, but not raced. Now im a track junkie myself, so this looks awesome, from track perspective, but im concerned with reliability and future maintanance. To be honest, im in love with the look of this car (inside and out), but price seems a bit high, has 150k miles, and was tracked. Please help! Is there anyone in the area by chance that can check it out? Im all the way in germany ![]() |

Price seems high for what it is, but maybe I'm just behind the market.
Where in Germany are you? We support each other here.

Price too high for a car with numerous mods and track history. How do you buy a car in NY from Germany? I wouldn't buy an old Porsche without putting eyes and hands on it and with a good PPI. Description lacks specifics, a lot of specifics.

That car is a turd. I wouldn't put $20k in it, let alone $30k. You need to look at other examples.

Looked fairly good to me having Fikse's, turbo flares, seats, wheels, and floorboards. High? Maybe so. Turd? Eye of the beholder. |

Normally, I'd agree simply because it's a targa. It's getting harder and harder to find good examples which leaves a lot of mediocre examples to wade through. It may be worth a closer look.

If I had the time, I could pick that car apart from just the photos. You have to know what you are looking at.
That's not the original speedometer, so how confident do you feel that the car has only 150k miles on it? The engine from a 1981 didn't look like that, so either it's not the original engine, or it's had some significant pieces changed. Lots of deferred maintenance. Worst-fitting targa top I've seen in a long time. $$$ Lot's of poorly thought-out boy racer crap on it. Lot's of modifications that are done half-ass. Like I said, it's a turd. A big, fat money pit, waiting on a fool to buy it. JR |

Not sure you want ship this back to Germany or not, but it has no, as in none, heat.
You can see in the engine bay photo that the heat fittings have been blanked off, a step beyond backdating. IMO the comments of the more experienced folks above will help you avoid potential nasty and expensive surprises. Sam |

One other thing I ought to mention... if you want to register the car in Germany, you will want to buy one close to stock. Getting a modified car to be legal over there is a lot more difficult than it is in the USA and the modifications will need to be TUV approved.

"American car (Texas), Reliable runner. Currently vinyl wrapped matte black, faux carbon fibre hood, Targa Top redone recently. No leaks.
Selling to move up a few steps in my Porsche experience. Pretty firm on price. Probably looking for excuses not to sell it. Good luck with that one... JR |
