Making the 911 leap

Im looking at a 1984 911 with unknown mileage due to an speedometer/ odometer change. The seller has not provided compression and leak down numbers. My question to the more experienced is, how important is this info given the unk mileage? Is this something that I should insist on receiving before proceeding? Thanks

Market is really hot so if it is a below market price, you probably won't have time to get a PPI done.
To some, they would not buy without a PPI or leak down. I didn't even have a PPI or anything done when I bought my car but I knew it had a recent top end rebuild and records since new.
If you are mechanically inclined, it may be reasonable to not get this info done but you are buying pretty blind if not.
Bottom line is, for some it is a non-negotiable to get full PPI but you run the risk of losing the deal. If seller is cool with you getting a leak down, etc, I would have it done for peace of mind. If I were to sell my car, I would set a reasonable price and let potential sellers do whatever they needed to do to know what to expect so both parties are happy, but that is me....
Good luck.

I guess it matters how you insist. If you expect him to pay and provide it you'll see the car go to someone else. If you ask permission to pay for a PPI you might get somewhere. I also always offer the PPI results to the seller if I don't buy the car.

Unknown mileage and history? I would not buy without compression/leakdown. Presumably you've driven it and confirmed the trans is quiet and the 1st gear syncro is good...

OTOH, I bought an 85 coupe 4-1/2 years ago with no more than a 4-block test drive because it was $9K. So the answer would vary with price...

Won't the Carfax have some information about mileage history? Unless the car's not been registered for years, that will give you some mileage data points over the years before the odo stopped.
