Keep it as is…….

Put the 912 motor on wood in the garage. Buy a already built 1800 CC VW motor and install that. You will have a very fun 912. Really who cares?? a Bug engine for a Bug engine! If you sell, you have the real Bug engine!!!! Also, you will save thousands!!!

PS - I've had my share of slow cars/bikes, and the ole "better to go fast in a slow car" is a bunch of malarkey spewed out by slow car owners!!! :D[/QUOTE]

I am gonna disagree with you on this one. I have a big HP car and a little 911 SC. I have bunches of fun driving the SC. I was recently stopped in my "other" car for accelerating too quickly. Not kidding. No burnout, no speeding, just getting to speed too quickly. My big HP car is loads of fun, but when I am "having fun" I'm probably in misdemeanor territory frequently. I personally think it's more fun to drive a slow car fast than a fast car slow.

How dare you, Mr. FlatulenceFlinger!!!

Butt seriously (sort of :)), that topic is definitely of the the "different strokes (not the kind that MattR is fond of giving himself!) for different folks" variety. For me, every time that I have moved "up" in vehicle power, be it with a track or road going machine, my sense of fun has increased proportionately. More power = more fun for me, even if I don't utilize the machine's potential. Talking "vintage" machines here, buttofcourse (don't have any experience with modern power).

My apples to your oranges Ronnie (or are they grapes?), but my SC is way more fun to drive than my 09 Twin Turbo.

That's because you're not doing it right, Nick!

Coconutz, btw!!!

Thanks for all the input, however, you guys are comparing your SC's to a turbo and other fast cars. Your SC's are rockets compared to a 912. When an SC is your slow car you, got it made.

The type 4 and bug engines would be a horsepower improvement but I'm still kinda on the fence about doing a 6 conversion. I still struggle with possibly ruining a decent car. An owner I spoke with recently bought a crashed SC and used what he needed to convert his 912. Turned out to be a nice 3.0 longhood.

ficke 03-22-2016 05:33 PM

I think you can still buy a nice SC for same or less than what you can sell a 912 for, so if you want a 911, and it sounds like you do, sell your 912 buy a 911 and pocket the difference.

JMT, so I take it that you like the looks, size, etc. of your 912 but would obviously like more power, and that the whole "built bug engine" doesn't do much for you (wouldn't for me, either), correct? If that is the case, I can see where just selling it and buying a 911 would not work for you. So my thoughts on your situation is to go ahead and do want you want regarding the engine swap. I am not one that cares at all about things like factory originality, OEM parts, or has any romantic thoughts along the lines of bastardizing the car, "ruining" what's special about it, and so forth; to me, they are simply cool machines (yes, I even think 912s have a certain amount of cool about them, despite all my 912 wiseassery :)), and in OEM trim, all 911s and 912s are platforms to be altered and manipulated in any way that I see fit. I consider a 911 engine conversion to a 912 to be be a huge improvement; aka - the opposite of "ruining" it. Of course, I would have to slap a turbocharger on the ol' 911 engine, butt you probably already ASSumed that! :D

Now, if you were asking about putting a Turbo wing on your 912, and/or a DP body kit, then I would say THAT is entering the ruining category right thar!!!

Ronnie, as always, thanks for all the chuckles you bring to the forum to lighten things up!
I do agree 100% with your sentiments about modifying 911/912. The essence of Porsche, IMHO, is all about performance mods. Didn't they themselves do it for about 30 years on the same chassis? Swapping all kinds of engines/trannies/body panels to make the thing go faster. I ,myself, wish they didn't "appreciate" so much (to use a, ahem, "investor" term); when they were cheap, owners were just having fun. Back then, it was all about how fast can you make your car go. Now, it seems like it's all about how much money are you gonna make off your car. Some of these new owners I meet are totally clueless about the car itself, they just see $$$. Sad...

Matt, thank you for the compliment - coming from you (pun NOT intended ), "freak" is a great honor (yer high standards for freakism, and all that)!!!

BUTT, what did I tell you about posting pics of my various harem members without my consent, bro!!! Keep it up (pun NOT intended ) and I'll be forced to cawk whip you, again!!!

Johnvan, yep, I have never understood the "keep it stock" mentality (though there is nothing wrong with that - each to their own) - it seems like such a shame to me to not build and improve upon any high performance machine, and no doubt that even the original designers and builders of these cars would have encouraged it (modern ones sure do - just look at the availability of factory, high performance parts from various manufacturers). Can you imagine any gearhead type at Porsche, past or present, thinking "I sure hope the buyers leave well enough alone and doen't try and tap (not like that ) the cars' performance potential and eliminate/improve upon design compromises that we were forced to implement"?!?! :)

Southbay356 03-23-2016 09:09 AM

How much will it cost you to do the 911 conversion ?

and when you add that cost to the value of the stock 912 could you just buy a 911 ?

I do not see it adding up as 912 value + 911 conversion cost = higher resale value later ,

And yes I know you are "never going to sell it" but we have all said that sometime and then sold to do something else.....

Matt Monson 03-23-2016 10:00 AM

I agree with Ronnie. It's your car. Do what makes you smile.

If I had kept my 912 I would have done a built type IV eventually. In these early cars 125-140hp is plenty. Get up to 200 and they become down right mean.

JMT 03-23-2016 12:28 PM

Thanks Ronnie and John. That's what I wanted to hear.
How about something similar to this? I wouldn't do an "R" recreation "lwb" but you get the idea. I Know this isn't a 912 but this Is one of my favorite builds.
Ronnie, In the cause for preservation of original cars I could see selling and starting with an already converted 912 or someones 911 project they lost interest in.

Jeff.
