Who cares about the preservation of a car?? they are consumables built to be used up and enjoyed and maybe rebuilt again.
To me it is about getting the car you want.
A friend was in a similar position as you are about three years ago, he had a 67 912 with a wore out engine and trans, but great paint and interior.
He looked at the 20K for the mechanicals and chose to sell the 912 as is for $25,000 and he bought a very nice original paint, metallic green, 84 Carrera targa with 80,000 miles and most everything worked and needed almost nothing for $19,000.
I think today the 912's are still quite a bit more that SC and Carrera's.
