Picking up my 1974 911S Targa (been 18 years)
Being my first post I'll first say I'm glad to be here! I've been a long term lurker and decided to join today given my recent decision: I'll be picking up my car that's been in storage since 1998!
I believe it originally came in sepia brown, but the PO decided on red. The other unfortunate aspects are no 2.7 motor and it came with a sportomatic (still got that)! At any rate, my plan was to buy a rebuilt 2.7 and return to stock power train or maybe a 3.0/3.2. Well fast forward life, kids, and now I'm ready to move on. It's been inside the whole time but of course will need a complete overhaul at this point. I'm curious what people think this car might have in terms of whole value (not parts). I'm obviously aware many questions need answered (specific condition of many places and more detailed history) but any ball park estimates based on the pics? Thanks for the discussion! Congrats!
Car "as is" with no motor is worth $15k depending on rust and paint quality. Another $15k minimum to find a good running motor, sort the fuel system, brake hydraulics, and new tires. You might want to source a 915 5 speed. Sportomatics don't get a lot of love, but are rare. I would go with a 2.7 for originality and repaint back to Sepia. The big plus is its a '74 and smog exempt in California. |

Strange you posted this. I've a 74 non S engine just down the road from you. Supposedly rebuilt but I'd consider it unknown as I've no receipts. Came with another car I bought.
PM me if interested.

And welcome to P-town!
Sportos get a bad rap but if everything is adjusted correctly they are well performing.

Are you picking it up as in buying it? Or picking it up from your storage and decided to "move on" as in selling it?

Thanks for your thoughts! Regarding ownership, I have owned it since about 1997. I picked it up from PO in KC, MO at that time and it has always been in storage ever since. As much as I'm tempted to rebuild now, I'm only interested in selling it now.

Brief update... Got some more recent pics of my car. The first is the car with 18 years of dirt! Next is a trip to car wash in prep for its journey out to my place. Still cleans up
Nice! ![]() ![]() |

Ah, yes the dig out. Looks good.
I got buried in work and kids and never did leak down that engine I have. Have you found one?

Don't get the guys hopes up. $15k with no motor in need of a full restoration is crazy. it should be $3-$5k because it's a roller. It's a non galv. Targa with a color change from Kansas so it's probably got rust or bondo.

Haha! No worries, Millermike- I may have posed the question, but I'm famiar enough with these cars to know it will bring more than $3-$5k. But I appreciate you looking out for me

Work it backward from a 74 targa #2 car. Original color and engine/trans very top of the market is what 45k? So with this we need a motor build 15-20K great repaint 8-15 k lots of other small bits to get it close, fuel system service, possibly a tank, correct deck lid, targa top resto and on and on. In the end still have to address the sporto, keep it original and most will shy away from it yet go 915 and car is unoriginal.
This would be a better candidate for what the owner was going to do with it in 1997. It's a targa, it's a sporto ... 10-12k as it is would be fair imo assuming limited rust . Rust key issue that drivers door striker area looks funky could just be the pic though. B Last edited by brisboats; 05-21-2016 at 05:56 PM.. |

Yeah, I really don't know what the metal is like now, but I'll find out soon enough. I agree my old drivetrain plans still seem like a viable alternative given the known changes. Could still make a decent driver. Who knows, maybe I'll keep it another 18 years if I get it running myself

I'd keep the sporto, repaint in whatever color you fancy and put a 3.2 in it.

Nice find on the motor/915! Great buy, but bad timing for me. None the less, that's a real example of complete engine AND 915 for $6400. I'm guessing it probably would not require an additional 10-15k to get it rebuilt as estimated above.
