On the sheet metal aspect, I will generally trust a body when paint has sat happily in place for a decade or so. To make a $100K hot rod, yes, I'd take it to bare metal. But there are lots of owners of $65K hot rods driving the heck out of them with '5-footer' paint jobs. |
That car looks like a real solid start. As TW suggested, if it was a b-grade install, there would be major cracking and peeling in the paint. Long term a buyer might want to paint it up all pretty, but stort term this is a project for someone looking to hot rod first and doll it up later.

To be frank, I've thought about just removing the dash, install the tach on the steering column, remove the tinting on the windows, 86 the portable phone, install a big red low oil pressure light, rebush the suspension, rebuild calipers, shocks, axles, install new rotors and brake lines, put in a new gas tank, install a hill climb gear box and 3.5 twin plug motor to keep things zipping and light, and away I go.
Who needs an interior? Who needs new paint? I already have a pack of Porsches, all neat and pretty, even the race car that's been rebuilt three times from some serious wrecks. Note my moniker here, Airborne!. I rolled my 944s2 three times at China Beach in a NASA race in 2011. Trust me, the fenders are on perfectly. I had two body guys look at the car. We do know some of the provenance of the car. Prior to being acquired by the PO, the car was maintained at Steinel's for more than five years. The car had a 3.0 engine in it and the engine went kablooey. The PO sold to the prior and it was acquired by me in a mega garage find. Oh, and it's not for sale. The true value in the car becomes apparent once you have the resources allocated to make the build. I'm thinking I'd love to have that rascal with no heater, no windows, no interior but one racing seat, a bar in the back to mount harness on, and racing headers. Hmmmmmm. I'd love to drive up to a clients house in that type of car, unbuckle the six point harness and step out in my tropical weight suit and tie. (completely wrinkled from the harnesses and lack of airconditioning. |
That sounds pretty damn boss. If you ever get tired of any of the cars I'm down the block and could stretch their legs :D
|
I'm confused. If it's not for sale why post it for people to drool over and piss on?
|
@Matt, I posted because I was curious as to the value the Pelican community would place on the car. In turn, this will help me make a decision to determine the proper amount of insurance to purchase on the car. It's a unique chassis and final value is determined by contract to purchase and/or an insurance claim.
And I'm not worried about this car getting pissed and drooled on... it'll roll right off it's beautiful fenders. That puppy is a junkyard dog and proud of it. Damn I named him, Leroy. |

OMG, Byron. Pics of you. Love em. Loves the tires in the back of the 944.

Ahhh I forgot that Grizzly Adams had a race team , but I thought it was NHRA :)

I saw a 1970 911 non-sunroof coupe for sale last weekend while out of town on vacation. Euro model, fitted with nasty gilled fiberglass turbo flares, and slope nose and tail kit. The later 2.4L CIS engine barely ran. Front crossmember was really rusted, but otherwise the pans were decent. Rust starting by rear window. Owner was asking $18,000.
If I had the time I would have stayed to try and get it down to $12k. Steve |
Thanks Cornerlot. Car may be for sale pending my purchase of a 67s motor for my 67 912. For those following this thread the car is still NOT for sale. Not sure if I want to give it up. If I decide to sell it I'll get a solid PPI from Steinels and post in the For Sale section.
|
I'm looking for wide front fenders if they're metal flared rsr type.
|
UPDATE: Later this spring/early summer I'm taking the car to Steinel's for a PPI and extensive photos. I plan to sell the car. If interested, send me a pm and I'll contact you once I'm ready to sell. I am not putting a price on the car until I know the exact condition of the car. I do not want to misrepresent the chassis. It takes a PPI to know the exact condition of the car so it can be priced.
|
For those subscribed to this thread or interested in the car, it's going to Steinel's on Tuesday, May 17, for a PPI. I'll publish the PPI and better pixs in the For Sale section after May 17.
|
Update: PPI cancelled. I'm having surgery May 23, nothing serious, just aggravating. I'll be out for two months and not allowed on track for six months. Having some colon removed as a safety precaution. When I'm feeling better I'll come back to the project of selling this car. For now it's dry and safe in my storage facility.
