Porsche 911 SC 3.0

Hi all!

This is my first post in this forum, so please be kind to me..
I have been looking for an aircooled 911:s for a few years now.
Hours have been used looking at objects on ebay, mobile.de, and various car forums, but no luck.
Last week I saw an object on mobile.de, the price was a little bit too good to be true, but I answered the ad. The car ad disappeared and I thought well well...

Then, a couple of days later I got an SMS from the seller, if I still was interested the car was for sale. I got a lot of pictures from him, the car is on german plates but positioned in Greece... The car was brought along when he moved back after working in germany, but it was too expensive to exchange the licence plates to greek ones.
The seller has agreed on transporting the car back to Germany without charge if I am intersted.

Is it possible to get information based on the licence plate?
How do I detect a scam?

Seems a little fishy. Can you get to Greece? Or just suggest that you go to Greece to examine the car in person. Usually a scam won't want you to show up to see a car that they don't possess.

This is a red flag.

Be careful with this. Don't send any funds unless you can see the car.

I have no problem catching a plane to Greece, but its a long drive home... I prefer to pick it up with a trailer in germany. To be able to get insurance I need the chassie number, and i also want a picture of the papers that shows the current owner.

If this guy was too cheap to reregister the car in greece, do you have any confidence that the car has received the proper maintenance it required?

If you have pictures I think it'd be worthwhile posting them here.

Rick has a good point regarding money spent. He can't afford to register it in Greece but he can get it back to Germany? Very questionable.

First you need to get the VIN
Why not send a message to The 'Porsche Pilgrimage' guy Chris Rusby and find out about if he has any contacts in Greece who could help. I believe he saw a car advertised on the samba and went to Greece unsure and came back with a 911. (which it turned out needed work)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jQ01j-ASWAM
I believe he is active on DDK or Impact Bumpers but you could probably also connect with him via Youtube.

I think there is a Greek rally team called CS Beetle and they are / were involved with Porsche racing ? They may be able to help or even know the car. Where is the car located presumably in Athens.

The other fact to remember is non payment of taxes in Greece is one of the reasons they have had such serious economic woes. However as the OP said it could also be indicative of bad finances and inability to keep the car maintained.
Good luck !

Before you start going crazy ask him for pictures of the car with today's newspaper on/in it. At least that way you know he is in possession of the vehicle.

If satisfactory, you can start digging deeper as others have said.

Yikes. That is a straight up fraud. Shipping to Germany cheaper than putting plates on it? Tell him to ship it , and you will pay upon it's arrival. You won't hear from him again.

I think that this is probably a scam, but I would not entirely discount the possibility that it is legit and the seller does not want to register it in Greece because he does not want the Greek government to know about it. Either way, what has already been suggested will probably give you enough information.

Found another one that must be a scam..

This is the new ad:

http://suchen.mobile.de/auto-inserat/porsche-911-carrera-cabriolet-1-hand-gimbsheim/224868935.html?&origin=PARK&ticket=ST-30317140-eTOYgtrgUdbRbEGutTFy-mycas46-1_c01_4201

And last year this was when it was sold on Ebay:

If the car is post 1980 run the carfax and find out the cars history. Also start searching with the vin to see if its stolen. You should start posting on the euro enthusiast sites see of anyone knows anything about the car.

At the same time start looking for somewhere the car can be inspected ideally a Porsche independent in Greece. If the seller is un cooperative offer to have the car flat bedded to the shop.

Did you talk to Cris Rusby ?

Vin#'s typed out mean nothing. A picture of the VIN with todays dated newspaper next to it is much better. I would chase it until it becomes ultimately clear it's a scam.

If anyone's been paying attention, Greece is in a terrible economic crisis. When I was there last October I was craning my neck to spot a Porsche for sale. There are literally kids rummaging through dumpsters for food in Athens, and these people are scurrying for their economic lives.

Keep going until you prove it to yourself. Don't send ANY money to anyone.

Good luck

I don't think that vin is right. See bold. That's supposed to be a zero.

Discovered their system...

They put an ad on mobile.de or similar car sales place. The price of the car is way below the expected market value of the car. After a while (half a day or so) the ad disappears. The potential buyers gets a bit down because they missed the opportunity on the nice car. A short while after the ad disappeared you get a sms from the "seller" saying: "the car is still for sale, please mail me xxxxx@gmail.com" or similar. The buyer gets happy again because he "won" the car back.... When you send a mail to the address you get an answer:

"Danke für Ihr Interesse.

Then he can transport the car home to you or if you would like to visit Greece....
The car does exist, but it's not his. What happens next I don't know because I sensed fishy business...

Beware of mr Spiridon Mikea...
