Finally bought a car

And then it happened: After a year and a half looking for an SC, only an SC, nothing but an SC so help me God, I finally bought... a middie. Took me a while but I finally realized that contrary to the popular saying, what I really wanted was the oldest 911 I could afford.

On the occasion of this solemn announcement I'd like to thank all the good people on this forum who patiently helped me and provided me with their expert opinions on the few dozen cars I kicked the tires on before I settled on this one: Matt Monson, Macroni, GothingNC, NYNick, Pmax and a few more - you know who you are.

But above all, the toppest of all top men Javadog, who almost literally held my hand all the way while I looked into this car and another one that unfortunately didn't happen.

So here we go: 74 Targa in Gemini Blue. Bought it quasi-sight unseen: sent it for a PPI but didn't get to see it with my own eyes or drive it. Turned out ok - it's highly imperfect, much more so than I thought it would be, and it should be no surprise I paid too much (it's a dealer flip of a dealer flip after all), but it's got great potential, and still should make for an ok driver in the immediate future.

I bought it two months ago but only picked it up on Thursday, and I already put 225 miles on it. What a wonderful sassy little car! I love it! So refreshing to get to drive a simple basic car with zero electronics, power nothing, and a zesty little engine that revs freely. I'd commute in it if insurance allowed (and if I didn't have to worry about the rain).

I'm gonna drive the piss out of it over the summer, make a list of all things I want addressed, then when the first snow comes I'll leave it in the capable hands of Jim at Auto Associates and by next spring it'll be a cream puff.

Sorry for the picture which isn't great

Congrats, I think the new Porsche advice is to "buy the oldest you can afford"

Well done! That color will never get old. The accents with the chrome / stainless are perfect for that color too.

Can't recall the vin off the top of my head but yes it was on ebay a few months back. I was tempted too, passed on it, then ended up buying it for a few grand more from the guy who bought it on ebay. The flip of a flip...

Sweet looking Targa...I'm a coupe guy but certain color combos in the Targa I really like, this is one of them. Congratulations. Tim

I'm not a big Targa fan but you just hit my big time desirable combo: Gemini Blue, chrome trim, stainless Targa bar and Cookies.

That is one gorgeous car. Well done!!!

Is this the car Trissl had on eBay? Blue cloth interior? Low miles?

Targas were what I liked as a kid. Now they are really starting to look great to me again. Like this one.

Another vote for more pics!

I found all the pics online.

Looks really clean and not a rusted beach car.

That one. Not low miles though. Odo shows 13k, the assumption is it turned over once. But with no receipts backing it up, it's more like "true mileage unknown".

I know. That story broke out right at the time when I was closing my deal... I was quite nervous.

Thank you all for the kind words.

It is a sweet looking ride, yesterday I joined a bunch of GT4 owners for a spirited drive on the back roads leading to Lime Rock (and mostly managed to keep up with them ) and I received a lot of compliments. One of them said, you're the only one driving a real Porsche, which I found quite funny!

In reality though like I said the car is highly imperfect... I'd say at this point it's a 6.5 out of 10 but I'm sure we will improve with some time, and patience and dollars.

A few things I noticed so far: Targa top is sketchy. Engine lid doesn't close shut properly. Some mother****er stripped the leather off the steering wheel. Becker mexico radio is long gone, replaced by a modern one with some big ass speakers in the door panels. Door pockets are shot. Visors are puffy. Needs new door seals. Speedo randomly starts oscillating, then it stops, than it starts again, without any apparent logic. There's some rotational noise coming from somewhere in the front that seems somewhat synchronized with the speedo oscillation. Dash lights are wired wrong, for example when you activate the left blinker the right arrow on the dash blinks and vice versa. The clock doesn't work. Plus the gentleman that re-inspected the car mentioned something about the fuel lines and the brake lines and a couple other things, I have his notes somewhere. Hopefully there won't be much more than that.

The chrome on Gemini is sp nice - very classy. Congratulations!

May I suggest that you have the fuel lines checked/replaced ASAP - it would not be ideal if you went up in flames with the Gemini!
