Looing at a 76 912E Value?
 

I'm going to look at a 76 912E with about 180K miles and about 10K on the rebuilt original motor, it has been converted to carbs but the seller does have the original FI unit. Newer tires, fuchs, nice interior, mostly original paint, records. Supposed to run drive and stop well. What are these going for these days? Thanks

I've seen nice examples in the low $20k range. Not sure if they are selling for that.

$25-30k. Great color. One of my favorites.

That's nice looking and like the color. Car was well cared for since the paint is mostly original but it looks tired. Maybe it's the pics or maybe a good detail could bring it back. Peeling and cracking on rear qtr panel though.

Records and recent engine rebuild is a plus. Carbs are a good modification even though they aren't original to the engine.

Too bad they tried to make it look like an 80s car. Should have bright trim and chrome sugar scopes. Aftermarket mirror is an easy swap out. 16" Fuchs are off a later 911, which works good on this car.

Check the heat exchangers condition. Hopefully they are ok. Good ones are as rare as good map pockets on a lwb early 911. And expensive if you find them.

Assuming no rust on the underside, I think $20k is top value.

I think part of it is the lighting. Sunflower has the slightest it of green in it. The German names of the color is limonen-gelb, lime yellow. Here's my car in different lighting situations, in a garage, in shadows,andin sunlight

I do agree it's a shame it was "updated". The mirror is really easy. There's a few DIYs around about restoring the trim yourself. The wheels would likely need professional attention.Here's how it should look:

Great little cars for driving in town, and like all 2.0 Porsches from that era needs to be driven as a momentum car. I had a friends for a few weeks and enjoyed the heck out of it. But it was anemic on the highway unless driven like an early 2.0 on the track, looking for gaps and using its balance They sound like a VW but it's really very fun to drive because it's basically a mid engined car. Great 1-3rd but 4&5 were a washout. I still want one I can lighten, re gear 4&5 and custom build a muffler and heat exchangers for. This ones a great color !
I think 20k is the limit just because it needs some cosmetic work. Drive and enjoy !

I just sold mine. 99% original for 27K Euros - one of the best there has been for sale in years. The car you posted is 20-22k USD, imo.

Condition is crucial, since some parts are expensive and hard (impossible) to find!

I had the same thing happen to me on a '68 911T I had agreed to buy from a local guy. Car wasn't advertised on the internet or anything. I call to arrange picking it up and he tells me he sold it. Two days later it pops up on BHCC site.

Based upon the pic of the engine bay, if that motor was rebuilt only 10k miles ago, he must be putting only 500 miles per year on the car. BTW, that motor looks like the same one in my 78 VW Westy, sans the FI system... How much hp did the 76 912E put out? My Westy puts out 70hp.

Basically the same engine as your Westy rated at 86 SAE HP.

I think they have the science of 'quick painless sale' fully worked out. You wouldn't believe the volume of Porsches they get in daily... in ALL conditions.

When I advertised my 912E for sale last year, within 5 minutes of posting the car onto my local Kansas City craigslist, I had an email offer from a man with a 310 area code. I was asking $15k, his offer was $10k with the assurance that the money would wire immediately and pickup would be arranged by them. I had a feeling it was BHCC but not 100% sure though. It was quick and they were ready to pay. And it wasn't a complete low ball offer compared to the other jokers who responded. Within a week, I sold the car for $1k less than asking to a local buyer.

And to the credit of BHCC, they do take tons of pictures of their cars top to bottom. They don't hide the issues.

I wonder who ends up buying those roached out rust buckets. Probably their margins are so high they can afford to write off a good number of the cars they buy.

The yellow one has peeling paint - typical for the 76 production. from about number 1000. Mine was 1370.

They sell a ton of cars to Europe. And they aren't all roached out. Look at that ice blue metalic middie targa they have at $32,500 right now. That's a solid little car. They are sharks, but as was posted they take a ton of accurate pictures. I almost bought a car from them before I was offered mine.

There are a million ads on the Phoenix Craigslist looking for Porsches I guess the guy couldn't wait a day for me to get there and called someone else. Pretty ****ty.

Sorry been on the road for two days, I would not have haggled with the guy, he had it priced at $15k. Guess I could have made a few bucks but I was really wanting to drive it so I could compare it my 88. Sounds like they are fun to drive.

They are if you keep them on boil. The gearing is basically the same as a 73 RS. With the flat torque curve of the T4, if you keep it above 4500rpm and use momentum toyiur advantage they are plenty fun on country roads. You aren't going to blow by a Dodge Cummins powered duelie on the uphill, but through the flats and on the downhill they hold their own.

Well if you just want to check out a 912E to see what it's like you should come over and drive mine. It's a little taken apart right now but should be on the road next week.

Sounds like a reasonable asking price but I don't think you missed out on a 'great deal'. That's the exact asking price I sold mine for last year.

They are fun around town Not much fun on the highway. Performance-wise, they do everything the same or better than a 911, except accelerate.
