what's my motor worth?

hey pelicanites... i have a 2.7 motor and matching trans from a 1974 911. motor #6146342 and i'm contemplating on selling it but don't know what it's worth.

any ideas? it's never been rebuilt but pulled at 40k miles from what the owner told me. the car suffered front end damage way back in early 2000's when it was totaled.

sorry the engine was sitting in the yard when i took this. engine turns and ran well when it was pulled.

any ideas?

What happened to the chassis?

Can you document condition? Leak down, compression, oil consumption?

from what he told me it had front end damage and the insurance company totaled it. he just kept the motor and tranny in back of his shop since 2001? i can't since it's immobile and i don't have the tools. i was thinking of splitting it up but i thought it might be worth more to someone together since it's numbers matching. plus it's complete with exhaust, heat exchangers and all.

You would be incorrect.

Webster's New World College Dictionary, third edition:

motor: 1. anything that produces or imparts motion. 2. an engine, esp. an internal combusion engine for propelling a vehicle.

engine: 1. any machine that uses energy to develop mechanical power; esp., a machine for transmitting motion to some other machine. 2. a railroad locomotive.

Then there is this:

What’s the difference between a motor and an engine? | MIT School of Engineering

Basically, engines are a subset of motors. In other words, you can say that all internal combustion engines are motors but not all motors are engines.

Roughly 5K for the engine w/o Trans (didn't say if you wanted to sell both).

What works against you is:
1) Sitting 15 years.
2) Story of only 40K miles in 2001 would be rare.
3) Can't verity important updates have been done.....

Just my 2 Cents.......

I don't think anyone is going to want the cargo shorts.

For an engine that has never been rebuilt, it's unusual to see a red fan and turbo lower valve covers.

It's also unusual for a 911 engine to only cover 40K miles in 27 years. So I'd be putting a core price on the engine and trans.

Used engines fall into 4 categories: documented pro rebuilds, amateur rebuilds, tested and 'only anecdotes.' Pricing follows the same order.

You hold onto it, and when you have the time, you come down to SoCal and rebuild that thing with your buddy!

Where did this come from? You holding out dog? May have to get a turbo on the sly just to show you up man. Haha!

yeah i thought that too techweenie, regarding the 40k miles thing. maybe i misunderstood him. i think i'm going to have it tested and get a leakdown done. from what i can see it's not a leaky 2.7 so that's a good sign.

@bleek, yeah let's a make a science project out of this! kinda like dissecting a frog in school, lol. i picked this up a while ago. what can i say, i'm kind of a hoarder when it comes to 911's and parts

There are builders who have engine stands on which you can run the motor. Find one of them, hook it up and test run it. Then you'll know...

Oh, and take a vid while you're at it to show any perspective buyer.

Leak down test is easy.
Takes less than an hour start to finish.
No need to run the engine.
