Longhood value: unsolicited offer to buy

Funny experience today in Target parking lot near the Pentagon. A guy pulls up, wants to look at my 1969 911E, numbers matching. He asks what it would take to buy and I say $100k, since I don't intend to sell but for that price I would at least consider it.

Anyway, he makes a phone call to his business partner (they apparently run a car lot). He comes back to me, more discussion, final question on how much I would sell for. I say $100K.

He tells me that it is only worth $30k to $40k and that you can find these all day long at his price. Plus the bonus quote: "if this were a 912 or Carrera it would be worth more".

I just smiled and drove away.

So let me get the straight. A 912 or a 3.2 is worth more than a clean Longhood?

Gotcha! That guy sounds like an uneducated dork.

Well, ya gotta admit that an original 1969 911E 3.2 would be worth more!

Yea, I need to keep my car covered even in my garage! Some guy drove up my driveway, which is a hundred feet long and asked about my '71. I told him $50k. Luckily, he passed.

I think I may have been selling myself short.

Thanks Farrell. It's a daily driver but still pretty straight.

I forgot to mention, while driving away smiling I rolled up the window and turned the A/C up Ah, modern convenience!

Gordon - I need to show this to my wife.....She just can't understand the need to keep the garage doors closed when someone I don't know is invited to our home....I always tell her they may be trustworthy, but you never know who they will tell what they saw....

Although mine isn't for sale for any reason, I guess everyone has their point of surrender. Or AMOUNT of surrender.

I tell people when they ask, "it's not for sale but it can be bought..."

If they are players it will show, if not, they'll walk..... like those guys did.

Thanks Steve. I love it but just got my COA (anniversary present, got a great wife!) and it was originally Sand Beige 6807. So now I'm torn on whether to leave it or change back when the day comes to paint. Sand Beige is really cool.

First off - this is a great car. Second - if you sell it and decide down the road you want to get back in to an early car - you will have hard time finding a car you can rely on and know like you know this car for the money. $100 is not far from what it would cost to be confident in your car as you are now. Congrats, it is a great car, please keep it.

Nothing is worse then the unsolicited lowball offer and then the justification behind it.
Just give them the GFY smile.

Just had this happen (although I don't have a longhand, just a plain '88 Carrera)! Our driveway makes it hard to see our cars but a guy saw the edge of the whale tail and came down the drive and asked me if I wanted to sell! Caught me off guard but he seemed legit, has a 06 C4S, had a 81 SC that caught fire and was totaled as well as some other nice cars. I was firm that I don't want to sell but it seems like every 3rd or 4th trip to buy gas someone comes over to talk about the car. The attention seems a bit odd.

Had this happen the other week.. car is my track-car project covered and parked in the driveway. Guy knocks on the door in a manner to make one think its a friend.. I peeped out the window and noticed his buddy waiting in an SL at the curb.. slipped on my shoulder-holster and opened the door with "yeah!" The look on his face as he says, "well I guess the 911 in the driveway isn't for sale?" was priceless.

I shouldn't be salty however, as numerous cars I've owned were acquired in the same manner, although this was long before everyone thought they were a car guy!
