968 future

I want to pick up a 968 just because I like them a lot. Not so much interested in investment value, but can not help myself asking the question. Are these cars going to get the hype at all?

"Air-cooled 911" hype? Probably not. But I'd think a really nice low-mileage example will appreciate steadily.

They've held steady for a few years now, with a slight up tick. They haven't seen any of the big jumps in values that the more special 928 models have, but that doesn't mean they won't in the future. I think they are great cars.

I'd buy one. With less than 5,000 made for the US and Canada markets (yes, in both coupe and cabrio) I'd consider them rare. Even in California they were rare. I never see one around now (in the Midwest).

As sort of the ultimate 944-derived ride, I'd buy one if I could get one and had space. I saw a coupe that needed engine work for around $4k once in LA. I almost did it because I liked the color.

Even though I am a totally '80s guy, I like the look without the pop-up headlights.

I wouldn't pay more than $10K (that's me), but when you put the right wheels on a 968 it still looks modern.

If you can find one you like, buy it. Forget about hype, it's a freaking fantastic sports car.

968CS. A Dutch guy had a yellow one for sale here a couple of years ago. About 20k miles at 20k Euros. I thought it was overpriced. If I had a fully functioning Delorean I would go buy that CS right now!

This. It's not going to help you retire early thats for sure. If you can buy one, drive it for years and break even or even make a little scratch when time to sell, you are doing better than most humans.

That settles it. I'm getting a 968.....or a 944 front booster.

The front booster will blow the "you know wutz" off of a 968, Chris! My brother has one, and with a couple-a-three mods to really wake them up (one of these days I'm going to turn you from your "stock only" mentality - "turn you out", so to speak ) and the front booster rips pretty well! Your wifey will definitely NOT question the speedo's functionality, either!

Have had plenty of 944s. But never a turbo - I actually like that design better than the 968. Do you promise that you wont mock me if I buy a frontbooster?

Chris, if I didn't mock you at least a little bit, then you would send me messages asking if I was mad at you or something!!!

All joking aside, the 944 booster pulls surprisingly hard for an inline 4-banger - gets your attention for sure.

You can pick up a 944T for under $10 grand, put another 2k into it and have a SERIOUS performance car. My 951 was VERY fast... but I don't think I'd buy another one, at least not as my lone P-Car. That thing needed near-constant attention, and the engine bay was very cramped; not an easy car to work on.

From what I hear, the 3.0 NA engine is a gem. The 944S2 and 968 won't keep up with a lightly-tuned 944T, but they are a pleasure to drive -- smooth as silk, really. I actually considered picking up a 944S2 or 968 coupe as a sort of 6-month daily driver to compliment my Cayman S and Volvo wagon, but the 968s are so rare that I would feel strange about logging tons of commuting miles, and the 944S2s are getting on in years...

Prices are already in the low teens for a nice high mileage driver. Under 10 will buy you a restoration project. Great cars! They really drive much differently than any 944. Power and throttle response like no prev 944.

I used to know every detail about the front-engined wasserpumpers, but it's been awhile. What is it that makes the 968 motor so much more robust than the 944S2? On paper they look very similar. Did the 968 have a version of VarioCam?

I don't know if it's any more robust, but it does have the first iteration of Variocam. Mine has an RS Barn chip and cat back exhaust so it may he snappier than stock.

Well, in europe the ok ones (951) start at 25k euros.
