Wow, I have never seen a Carrera in such bad shape

Wow. There are no words

Actually, I have found a few words: A good reality check on what a 30 year old car can actually look like.
I have gotten spoiled by 911 ads, where even a "dog" is in much better condition than a typical 30 year old car.

Panel gaps are nice and straight, so it was very helpful how he points out the rust spots so we can identify the flaws.
I was pleased to not be let down by the interior, as it matched the patina of the exterior very nicely.

How does the bolster foam get eaten away like that? Pit Bull? Engine bay is also "period correct" Clearly, not a fake patina.

They painted right over the bumper, wiper arms, and window trim! Is that paint overspray on the windshield??

How would just the black plastic trim all be missing? Sent it out to get reconditioned??

The rear headliner? How does it fall off like that?

I actually feel nauseous and stressed out right now.
I need to step away from the computer.

Only rust SPOTS are in pics...haha!! Yeah right. In one of those pics it looks like there is another 911 under the tarp for their next "restoration". There are no words is right. The project I found looks like a jewel now.

PS: Watch out for that Linden NJ witch!

bbturbo 05-29-2016 06:48 AM

Pretty sad, especially with the cig sticking out of his mouth. Def needs a lot of work, but could easily be saved.

sc_rufctr 05-29-2016 06:49 AM

I've seen worse. That car could be put right in a few weekends and not a lot of money.

It looks like someone started "restoring" it and lost interest.

Yes, but those are not cars for sale, so this one feels different.

For a complete basket case, there is one choice: replace everything or forget it.
In a way, that is simpler to accept.

For this one, it's more scary, b/c someone is going to try to save it, and have to make a multitude of choices.

Lake Guy 05-29-2016 07:37 AM

When I was looking for my project I would taken this one. I didn't know anything about 911s till I bought mine so I was going in blind - it's been working out fine though. I don't think a couple weekends will make that car right and I'm sure there will be lots of money spent on it but definitely doable.

The windshield wipers painted body color are a nice touch.

Was just thinking... maybe some rattle can brown on those seats would freshen them up?

Jrboulder 05-29-2016 10:15 AM

6+ years ago it was a lot less expensive to get into a carrera. That's a 7k car circa 2010. People do dumb things with cheap cars.

tkmoore 05-29-2016 10:35 AM

No way it's worth $26,500

Limited Albino edition?

mdwracer 05-29-2016 03:23 PM

I think the value of the car is if it lived in N Carolina most of life as title shows and has little rust...def not worth 26.5k, but should bring 18-19 as a good candidate for a backdate with G50.
I agree with JRB in fact that car was worth a ton less in 2010...and people do dumb things with cheap cars.

So, if a guy with only mechanical skills (not body work and paint) wanted to backdate this car, could he do it for $50k? And have a car like this one currently in the "for sale"
forum?

Sorry I couldn't link to the ad, only the picture.

Anytime a seller is encouraging "European buyers" you have to be extremely cautious.

$50K plus the purchase of the car, let's say $20K if you could buy it for that...
you are now in for $70K and that is a minimum. Its a scary venture unless you are familiar with the process and dont count your time. If you have never taken a car apart or have the wherewithal to put it back together, this may cost you even more in the long run.
I would sincerely take that $70K and find something already laboured and loved. Good cars can be found for that money.
on the other hand, if building your dream ride is the reward you are looking for, then plan it well.
People always say to start with a good car when considering a project, this car would not be my first choice. I dont believe the mileage, those odometers are notoriously known to fail. That is one of the first things I observe when on a test drive of a potential car. 2 twice I have had that happen, sellers have a real dumb look on their face when I point it out. Kinda kills their "low miles" claim.

Your first car to restore would preferably be one that has never been taken apart to eliminate figuring out what is and what should never be??? oh sorry thats a Led Zeppelin lyric. ♪

Seller says colour is "8080 Silver Metallic"

Maybe that's just the stripe colour... I want to like it, but I'm having a hard time getting my head around the longhood front and impact bumper rear. :(

Cheers

No harm in liking pink that's rare for an obvious reason - each to their own, buttofcourse! Matt M. does, and he's a real cool dude with a great sense of humor (paging MattR to the courtesy phone).

Nice, nothing that some bondo and silver spray paint won't fix. OP's white bumperettes is a new idea - mostly see those in black, not sure that look with work in silver....for $20k worth a try.

I've seen a worse one, unfortunately it was after it arrived on the truck, you can read the whole story here:

The best part of the bay listing is the reason why the ad was pulled:

Quote:

This listing was ended by the seller because the item was lost or broken.
That car looks like it was under water -- flood damage.

I wonder if they covered the window glass when they spray painted it white, or just painted the whole car, and scraped the windows afterwards....

sugarwood 10-16-2016 09:01 AM

I pulled the pics from Ebay, to save this gem for posterity.
