BaT for auctions over $100,000 ??

Seems cars and the site really struggle when the $100,000 mark is hit. I believe that online auctions are a poor choice once cars reach the $100,000 value. Seems buyers want to touch, feel, smell the car before they will pay over $100,000.

Agree, I wouldn't list a big ticket car there. The Diablo was bid up to almost $150k though

Really depends on the car. The Griffith Series 200 sold for all the money this month. Also a nice 190SL and Ferrari Dino owned by BAT sold for good $$$. BAT might not be the best venue for the $100k Porsche market right now. A nice 79 Turbo only got bid up to $115k yesterday. As the market continues to soften I'm sure BAT will be requiring sellers to lower their reserves if they want to advertise through them. I feel like the majority of people are still asking for summer 2014/2015 auction prices for their fairly common Porsche air-cooled Turbos. Market correction is happening as we speak.

Also, isn't your narrative that tons of overseas buyers are going nuts for 930s? Aren't they doing their shopping online?

Below is a good guide on condition. A very small percentage of vehicles qualify for a true condition #1 vehicle. As far as a market correction we'll have to see what happens by the end of the year but in general I've been seeing a whole lot of air cooled 911's on the market and not selling in 2016. We can easily see a 10%-15% correction from 2015.

RATING DESCRIPTION

1. EXCELLENT/SHOW CAR A masterpiece, this perfect original car is in the same condition it was in when delivered new or better; or a professionally-restored car that has been restored to new or better than new condition. This car is not driven, and is transported to shows in an enclosed trailer. Normally stored in a secured, temperature and humidity controlled environment when not being shown, this car would be expected to come within a point or two of a perfect score when judged by professionals using current criteria.

2. FINE An original car with very low miles that has been meticulously maintained since new; or an older professional restoration that has seen very limited use since restoration. Very close inspection by an expert may detect almost insignificant flaws or wear, but to most enthusiasts the car would look perfect. This car would come within several points of a perfect score when judged, and would receive the top award at a show unless a true Number 1 car were also being judged.

3 VERY GOOD A well-maintained original car that has been driven limited miles over the years; is completely operable with all equipment working as designed, and at first glance may look perfect; or an older restoration that has been driven limited miles since the restoration was completed, and is showing minor wear and tear from being on display at car shows. Closer inspection may reveal minor wear on parts susceptible to showing wear, such as brake and gas pedals, and some thinning of paint and chrome finishes may also be noticed.

Doesn't twin plug obviate detonation (to an extent)?

This 69T BAT blows my mind, nice car but for 144k I don't understand? So many nice builds sitting around the 80-100k mark? What caused the bidding frenzy??

Butt not to the extent of 11:1 static compression with air cooled heads (very high octane fuel, and/or ignition with knock detection and dynamic timing control would be required - or a "baby it" approach with the throttle).

That car probably had over $150k of work into it. $50k + went into the engine alone. The vintage Heuer timer set would fetch $10k easily these days.

Fubawu, I agree the sale price seems very hard to believe. The car is definitely cool and undoubtedly very fast/capable. That said nothing was period or factory correct about it and all parts used are readily available. Specialtyoneinc, that Heuer stopwatch panel is just pieced together and could be easily replicated for $300-500 tops. All cars I have seen that approach this price level have impeccable build quality, are immaculate, and use expensive/rare period parts to achieve a more authentic build and appearance (this was none of the above).
