Help me evaluate this car

Hi guys, i'm shopping for my first 911, and have found this car thru a friend. It's part of an estate that will be settled soon. I'm considering this car because of it's rarity and potential value.

I don't know much about the car yet but plan to get it to my shop for a better visual inspection very soon.
What i do know, is that it has been stored outside here in southern California for probably 10 years. I think most of that time it was at least under a cover. It runs, but the battery was dead on todays initial visit so i couldn't start it. It has been run in the past few months, and driven.

Its a 1988, the paint is dulled, but should buff/polish out. It shows 94k miles ( i know the odo may not work, ill confirm that next week when i drive it to my shop) Tires are bad, and the engine is very oily underneath. The light grey interior is very nice, and undamaged. The wheels will need to be polished. All the brakes are rusty, and surface corrosion pretty much everywhere. Rear engine hood (don't know what you call it) lift supports are bad. Body is straight, and there is no rust. Underbody looked straight and not damaged from lifts, or speed bumps.

I know the pictures are piss poor, but this was all i could get under the circumstances.

I assume the motor will need to come out to be cleaned up, and fix whatever ailment is causing the massive oil leak.

I'll know more next week once i can get it to the auto repair shop i work at and can have a better look at it. But, given this little bit of info, what's your thoughts ? Run away,..... or try to buy it and save the ole' girl.

What would you say it's worth knowing those few things. ???

If you've got the dough and the know-how, I'd save it assuming you can handle the PPI results.
Can you do a PPI or do you have someone who can?
Run away? Nope, not yet anyway.
Good luck! What year? looks 84 to 89.

They, as you may already know, are a very pricey engine to have rebuilt, and being that it is a Turbo, it no doubt has provided many 'fast and furious' - fun rides.

One owner 1989 Turbo's, with documented low miles, are now fetching $200K +/-

That's a 930, not a plain Jane 911 Carrera. $75k

If the title is clean and the engine starts, I will pay minimum of $50K without PPI. Even if it is not running, you might get it much cheaper. This find will not last long. So grab it before someone beats you to it. How much the estate wants for the car? Keep us posted.

I would have a reputable Porsche mechanic do the PPI that is very familiar with air cooled turbos. Have them do a full leakdown/compression test and really dive into the transmission. This forum can probably aid in finding the right person in your area.

But move quick. Someone with 60-70k in cash very easily could snatch that up tomorrow.

An '89 Turbo isn't an apples to apples comparison here, as that was a one year car with the 5 speed G50 gearbox. An '88 Turbo will have the 4 speed yet. But an equivalent example for an '88 would still be in the $150K range I would think...

It is $30,000.00 car as it sits. Car will never commence outragous prices because:

1. Who knows if it is original miles
2. Who knows original paint
3. Who knows how much work it needs to bring it back to life- We are talking tens of thousands here

It is not "oh jaw.drop.wow" barn find. It is somebody's neglected 930.

I can part it out for double that. No way anyone who has a clue is selling even a rough 930 for $30k these days.

Yeah, point me to the direction of a 930 for 30k and I will buy them all day long. I wish cars like this came to me more often! Lucky! Don't let this one get away.

Only on n/a 911s - when on a Turbo, the engine cover is known as an awesomenesslid!

Things to check for on the engine:

1) the engines have dilivar head studs top and bottom - some are likely to be broken by now or altered enough that they are not providing consistent clamping force (big $$$$ repair).

2) typically, valve guides are in need of replacement much earlier than 95K miles due to the very high head temperatures of the turbo engine - big $$$ repair.

3) turbocharger that has sat idle for a decade will need to be rebuilt sooner rather than later (or replaced with a unit that is actually worthy of the car - the original 3ldz is a joke). Same goes for the a/c compressor since it has sat stationary (seals likely shot, etc).

4) check bottom of oil tank for coked oil particles - common if engine is run with non-synthetic oil and previous owners were not diligent about allowing the turbocharger to cool some prior to shutting the engine off. Coke particles are known to plug the cam spray bars, which results in damage to the cams and rockers since Porsche decided it was a good idea to send oil, which was superheated by the turbocharger's bearing cartridge, directly back to the oil tank, unfiltered.

5) ensure wastegate functions as intended - when they sit, the diaphragm degrades, and corrosion can cause the valve to stick to the seat/guide.

Fuel injection system - fuel head, injectors, lines, hoses and control pressure regulator (also known as the warm up regulator or WUR), will need work since they have sat with old fuel in them.
