79 Targa with broken head stud
Ill be listing a 79 Targa for a coworker next week with 177,000 miles that has one broken head stud. The car is all original. I don't know the official name of the color yet but it is the metallic aqua marine (Looks like the ocean water at Aruba). The interior is in very good condition. Seats were redone and look vey good. The Dash has no cracks and photo's very well. The exterior Photo's extremely well. I recall there is a small paint blemish on the rear wheel well (possible rust underneath) And he says there is a small rust spot near one of the door hinges. The car has no whale or duck tail. Pretty sure the car has 7 and 9 fuchs. He's owned it 14 years and has put about 10,000 Miles on it. My thinking is it is a $32,000 car minus $10,000 for engine rebuild and others. Interior is very good, Exterior needs some touch up but not immediately necessary, time for an engine rebuilt. Does $22,000 sound fair? Am I crazy? Am I good? He'll be bringing it over to my house over the weekend and I'll do a more thorough look over.

It's a reasonable asking price but I don't know if he will get it. If you start that high he needs to be ready to potentially take 15-20% less than that if he's not getting any real bites.

Personally I think it is too high based on the various SC Targa's that are for sale and have been for a while. The link below is a beautiful Targa that has not found a buyer at $30k and didn't yield a sale on Ebay either. I would search the for sale section for a better idea.

At 177,000 miles, and a broken head stud, $10,000 is just the cost starting point for an engine overhaul (aka - would be nutz to not split the case and do a complete service while down for head studs replacement - at a bare minimum, the intermediate shaft bearing will be worn beyond its service life), and would be far more expensive if the car was just dropped off at a shop for the work.

You maybe right, might not be the best comp but at least it is an honest seller with a lot of documented work performed for him to have a basis.

I've been searching past sales but haven't found too many recent comps. Most sales I've found have either been in nice condition ($30K+) or completely trashed (Interior, exterior and engine trashed). This one is in overall very good condition (needs a little exterior cosmetics to be perfect) but needs an engine rebuild. That's why I was originally thinking $32K (For a really nice car with a fresh engine - $10K to perform the rebuild) = $22K. No accident's, no speedometer issues, no stories, honest , solid car.
Keep the input coming (thank you)- sounds like it may be a little high at $22K.

I don't think $22k is a bad starting place at all. But the rust comments bear confirmation. Visible rust in a 79 car is a serious danger signal.
Rare color in good, original paint with a nice interior will sell a car, even with a headstud issue.

Cashman, You may want to try a search on Ebay for "sold" SC's. Unfortunately you have to sift through the shill bidding, relisted, etc.. but there are legitimate sales as well for a basis.
Hope this is helpful. |

The car is posted http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-cars-sale/927058-79sc-w-broken-head-stud-22k.html
Has a little more paint issues than I thought but is all original and the interior is in excellent condition. Drives well. Will see what happens.

How much is the car worth, fixed?
Subtract $15K. That's your number. (BTW, it isn't $22K)

That's much rougher than originally described, at least paint. $5-6k less than originally thinking.

Speedo story is too complicated. Seller should have just calibrated the miles to the actual miles and been done with it.

Just a follow up: The car is sold. The asking price was in-line. Received 20 calls with 16 offers the first week. Obviously some were low ballers and flippers (about 1/2). The car sold near asking price the first week and is going back to the motherland to a gentlemen that used to work in the Porsche factory. Hauler picking up this week.

Still here
|
An uncommon and cool color in original paint (mostly in this case) is the wildcard here, hard to value against a similar car in GR or that silver targa mentioned for example. I brought this up before and some just don't get it.

^^ agreed. All original (although some rough paint areas) and the color received the most comments.

Thanks for providing the sale price update. It's a nice car worthy of an engine and body refresh.
Far better project than the $20k green 75 targa sporto project in the other thread.

Congratulations on the sale.
I think this system of subtracting needs of a potential purchase of a car with needs is a smart way to buy, but a poor way to sell. There are a lot of buyers who pay way over the realistic amount for a car to make it right and still come out ahead or at the most even. So when selling, put a price out there above the realistic amount and let the dreamers, hopefuls and flippers have their chance to over pay for a car, it is only fair. |

Using the "what it needs" deduction, an SC with a broken headstud, a graunchy 915, and faded paint would be worth almost nothing.
