How much to pay for a 83 SC?
Guys,
I have owned an 84 Carrera for about 12 years now and have the opportunity to pick up and 83 SC from my Uncle. I would like your opinion on what it is worth. I have not driven it yet but I was able to start it up. It is a coupe with a sunroof with 95K original miles and a clean title. The color is a light steel blue with a black interior. There are no dents and I can't see any rust. The car looks straight. It only leaks one or two small drips of oil occasionally. The paint is not great. No peeling it just looks a little blotchy in areas. I looks good at about 10 feet It fires right up idles smooth and is smooth though the rpms. No idle hunting. It has a very nice 1 in 2 out stainless steel muffler with a straight pipe in place of the cat. The straight pipe has an O2 bung. The car has been lowered to at least Euro specs. It has Chrome Fuchs The interior is in decent shape. No rips in the seats and one small crack in the dash near the passenger side vent. The headliner is fine except for the sunroof it sags The sunroof works very well It has a momo steering wheel It has the Carrera Chain tensioners installed. Did not check for the pop off valve. I have not been able to determine if the AC makes cold air yet. I would need to replace the light stalk because it does not have turn signals or high beams. Assuming the clutch and transaxle, and suspension are fine when I eventually get to drive it. What do you think this car is worth at this point. Mike

I would get a PPI from an experienced Porsche shop.
There are likely a number of maintenance items that will need to be attended to $$$. Is there a maintenance history and recipes for repairs? The main issue, in my mind would be broken head studs or hidden rust as this is common on these cars. The bottom line is, if the car is pristine, and your uncle wants top dollar that's one thing. On the other hand if will you have to spend money on maintenance or repairs, then you can negotiate. Carefully check the condition of the wheels. Chromed Fuchs tend to have corrosion issues. These cars can go for anywhere around $20k to $40K nowadays, but I'm not an expert on the current prices.

Sounds like a upper $20k driver if no serious issues pop up on a PPI. Maybe $30k.

Thanks Guys. I will be driving the car next week end and will be able to get a better feel for it. I'll post some pictures then.

Anyone think bad paint is like a $5k hit ?
I've seen otherwise solid cars go for a lot less simply because of a few areas of clear coat peeling.

Well, it IS your uncle, so that should make the price better than market.
On first read I liked what I saw. The worn paint doesn't bother me, especially if it's original. If it's bad repaint, that's another matter...Sugar may have a point there. But it's a cool color. $25K is a good deal if the PPI checks out and the head studs are ok. I think it would be cool to have an 83SC and an 84 Carrera. The last year and the first year type of thing. I was able to take the car for a long drive today. The engine pulled strong in all gears, it also shifted easily in all gears. The clutch engaged pretty close to the floor so a clutch replacement may be due soon but there was no chattering or slipping. I confirmed the Carrera Chain tensioner upgrade had been made. My uncle also buffed the paint and it looked great. It will still need the motor mounts replaced and the green struts (Bilstein) look old but are still working well. The sun roof is brand new and works great.
Here are a few picture. Does this still look like it could be a 25K car? ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Nice car, I hope he gives you the family discount.
And upon purchasing, please remove the K&N filter sticker off the filter housing. |
