1989 Speedsters

Does anyone have a sense for what these are actually selling for right now? I think about $150k for a 20k mile wide body car in excellent condition but that may be too high. A good few cars for sale at high asking but I think many are on commission and not dealer stock.

I know of several private party sales north of $150 with 20K+ miles. There appear to be a lot of them for sale at the moment.

I think it comes down to whether you want to sell the car or advertise it for sale. There appears to be a lot of cars on the market right now at very high prices. If you want to pay north of $150 for one there are plenty to choose from. My guess is of you want to sell one you need to place the asking price below all of the rest.

Thanks for the responses. I wouldn't mind buying/owning one but not sure if they are going up/down or sideways. Seems to me to be very hard to know what they are really worth right now. My sense is they have gone of the boil a little.

I dont think there is a whole lot of mystery in the price. I think you should be able to buy a nice lower miles car for about $150 give or take. The market for air cooleds has come off a bit in the last few months. The 89 Speedie is a car that will always hold value in the long run. At $150 you may have some short term risk but if you plan on holding it over the long haul I dont think you'll get hurt unless you rack up the miles or damage it. That being said, I like to drive my cars. If you want one to drive I'd be patient and find one with some miles on it.

This seller has a great rep and this is an interesting 89 Speedie thats a Swiss version:

1989 Porsche Speedster | Sports Car Shop

They might deal on it.

I saw this u-boat sell for $50k ish at B-J in Scottsdale less than 10 years ago when I was living in AZ. Wonder what it is worth now. Even with it's history, it was really clean in person.

I imagine there will be several at the upcoming auctions an if they sell will be good data points.

I suspect the pattern for 89 Speedsters is pretty much like the 80-86 930 market. When there were few on the market, some brought strong prices. Those strong prices brought dozens of cars to market - more than there were buyers for.

So, basically it turned from seller's market to buyer's market in a matter of months.

Well said tech...

Econ 101... when supply exceeds demand prices drop

If I were in the market for one of these I would pursue that Swiss one. If you could buy it for a decent price it would be a cool somewhat unique car. Oh, and ditch the spoiler.

Thanks, I am actually going to be in OR early Jan so will take a look. It appeals to me more as its a ROW model.

There was a guy in Atlanta using one as a daily I met a couple of years ago, think it was already up to 90k miles.

There is a 94 speedster currently for sale in the $80K range- High miles/ new motor, but looked like an interesting car and would be a fun driver.

Two 89's in Pano @ 225K - I think those are examples of someone just looking for stupid money.

As an owner of an 89 Speedster I love seeing the high prices - but I have owned mine since the early 90's- could never afford to pay today's asking prices.

I really like the 94 Speedie, I used to own one that was sadly stolen out of my garage when I lived in Santa Monica. At the time I couldn't give it away. I did see that high miles one and thought it would be interesting. Be a great car to do a wide body conversion on.

This thread caught my eye. I'm a long time reader and a new member. I have an 1989 Speedster with 23k miles and am in Oregon. My car is not listed for sale but I would consider a serious offer.

Was it white with a black top?

The only Speedster I've ever seen was in a Whole Foods parking lot in Atlanta (Buckhead) and was white with a black top. I was floored when I walked out of the store and saw it.

They were not all red, but they are all for sale. All of them using CAPS saying how rare they are. What's rare, is finding one that isn't for sale.
