What color and is it worth it?

So I took my 911 SC to 3 paint shops today. Quotes ranged from $12k-$17.5k. I flat out won't pay / can't afford that much for a paint job so I'm faced with dissembling and stripping the car myself to get things down to the $5k-$7k range. Now the tough question - is the effort and money really worth it? Or will I be constantly stressed out worrying about rock chips and leaving the car unattended? Next question - if I do move forward - I can't decide what color. Keep it the same (schwarz metallic), do Grand Prix white or Arrow Blue?

What's the original color? I'd keep it original if it was mine.

mgar88 04-19-2017 12:44 PM

what's the interior color?

kenikh 04-19-2017 02:03 PM

Black Metallic is a great color. And going original is cheaper.

Keep that one original color. You will have a heightened sensitivity to potential chip events and small children near it. BUT what can be pInted in its entirety can certainly be touched up.

rattlsnak 04-19-2017 02:29 PM

unless you're going to paint all the door jambs, inside door frames, glass out etc, then don't change colors..

Well good news is no one that I took my car to wouldn't not paint the jams and take out glass lol. Everyone wanted to go all out an make it a show quality paint job......I just can't justify spending $15k for paint on a $25k car. Which would be worth $30 with nice paint. I've got 186k miles on the clock....don't think my cars worthy of $15k in paint. Maybe I'm wrong.

She looks pretty good in the pic.
What's wrong with the paint?
If no bare spots, drive her as is with no worries!!

green 73 04-19-2017 05:16 PM

I have to agree with BK911
It is a nice car as is, although I do not like the tail
It should be driven and loved as it is unless you want a perfect looking car
Find a good detailer and through money at him and let him work his magic
with a buff wax and a little touch up paint, like on the front bumper.
That's what I would do.

techweenie 04-19-2017 05:18 PM

Do a vinyl wrap for $3000. Go wild with your dream color.

SalParadise 04-19-2017 05:53 PM

Yeah, that's nuts.

I'm having a local guy do mine - he's really good. I'm pulling off everything (bumpers, glass, lights, rear Targa window, etc). I'm buying the paint. He's charging me $3200.

It's worth it to me for that. But not anymore than that. Plus it's a lot of work.

I'm not doing any bare-metal repaint. I'm painting over what's there as it's well stuck and it's just getting sanded.

Keep it original.

trader220 04-20-2017 01:30 PM

I am with Tech, wrap it. A good wrap guy can do the car in any color you like for 3 to 5 grand door jambs and all.

brianvb 04-20-2017 05:43 PM

I have a Schwartz metallic 930. I love that color. Keep the color !

I'm with green73.
As long as there are no rust issues and paint isn't worn thin a great detailer can work magic on a black car for $1k +/-

Rappers

I agree with Mr. Weenie....also the Wrap may help to defer many rock chips to original paint?
Go to the Ghetto...you will have a bunch of Rappers to chose from..SmileWavy

This! I have a black 88 turbo. Paint looked dull, a lot of micro surface scratches, swirls, son used a brush on the hood. He might as well been using a brillo pad. Finish on car looked like crap.
Found the go to detail shop, car looked like new when completed. Not sure, I think it was a 3 stage process. Was really amazing to see the before and after. Cost was under $500.00. tulsadetail.com- A little more info on what they do and what you may look for in your area.

bbturbo 04-21-2017 03:59 PM

I just had a 911sc quoted for paint at 6-9k. 12.5-25k is outrageous. Go original color.

Keep the patina!
Can you post better photos?

There's a reason why I chose my forum username. It should help answer your question and resolve your dilemma.

touringmandan 04-23-2017 06:04 PM

Keep it in your Schwartz!!

The way to do it is Contact / contract a shop to work with you.
One that you can freely ask advice from.
Their piece of the pie is they get all the attaboys for 1% of the work. (spray job)
What do i mean?
-disassemble it yourself, do a lot of the prep work (all ? )
Roll it in their shop, tape it up (Another two hours) they shoot it and all the parts.
You pay them a *1000 bucks and go home and assemble.
Anyone ask who shot the car you can mention their name.

*could be less but it will be about 600 dollars for paint and products plus paint booth time.

I've done this. Came out just fine.

What color and is it worth it?

Yea I'm keeping it schwarz guys! Thanks for the input. There was an amateur repair done to the passenger door. I'm gonna have that corrected and the front bumper resprayed and call it a day. The car has been resprayed previously and has had a couple bumps and bruises since then.

I was ripping down the freeway on my way to road Atlanta last weekend to go to The Mitty and I ***** you not. I had a 1 inch diameter rock come down on top of my sunroof and scratch it. I laughed because my dad was in the passenger seat and about 10 years ago I was driving his SC with him in the passenger seat on our way up to road Atlanta and a 1 inch diameter rock put a big gouge in the hood of his all original very nice 911. I've driven to road Atlanta 3 times in my life. 2 out of the 3 a big rock damaged the car. Right then I decided I will never spend $15k on a paint job because I would not be able to enjoy my car ever again.

Smart move. Put any extra money you wanted to spend on paint to mechanical/performance style upgrades

Matt Monson 04-26-2017 05:17 PM

Nice story, other than the rock part. But that's part of what makes these cars "ours". You have your rock story, and it was with dad. You guys will never forget the rocks.

ninezeroone 05-02-2017 06:03 PM

Glad to hear you're sticking with that color. It's personally one of my favorite colors on a 911.
