Another "What's It Worth?" thread...

I haven't paid much attention to the air-cooled market over the last decade or so. I was talking to someone yesterday, who told me the market for air-cooled Porsches has gone crazy. That got me thinking that my car is under-insured.

So, please help me with a valuation so I can insure the car accurately.

1984 911 Targa
92,000 original miles
Original paint (Kiln red)
Original interior
Al Reed polished Fuchs
Rennshift performance shifter
Dansk sport muffler
Blaupunkt radio (CD player to replace the original radio)

If you need more info for a valuation guess-timate, feel free to ask.

I appreciate your help!

I did. It seemed low...given what I've been hearing.

Watch similar ones on ebay. factor in your plus and minus things such as original paint and low-ish miles.

35-40 based on A #3 car in good condition. Coupes always demand higher prices

For me it depends on what you would want from your insurance. If you want ALL the money you could probably justify $50K. If you would just be looking to replace it I think it could be easily replaced with a similar car for $35K plus shipping (nationwide search). Asking may be more but I think you could get one for that, perhaps a bit less.

Maybe I am nuts I under insure by $10K and save the premiums. I DIY so I figure I could save on repairs or part it out to make some of it back. Maybe I should compare the difference in premiums for ALL the money and $10K under average price, they might be insignificant.

Your friend is probably seeing driver long hoods often asking 60-70K and rusty non op cars for low $20K. Really nice long hoods (even T's) are low six figs. Nice Ss' double that. But the S's have always been high.

I called Hagerty and asked for $45k, and they didn't blink an eye.

So, $45,000 it is!

Thanks, everyone.

Try selling that car for $45K. You'll hear nothing but crickets.

Doesn't matter. Try wrecking that car hard and fixing it for less than $45k. It's insurance, not a selling price.

Try buying one that matches for under $45k in a hurry.
Remember it's "make you whole" that you are paying for.

If I 'wrecked it hard' I'd take the money and run.
$45K can buy you a nice car these days after the old one is totaled.

Sure, but I would rather be over-insured than under-insured if it ever came to that.
