"Is my 900XXX case worth anything?"
Hello. I have a 1974 Porsche 911 Targa which has an engine with the numbers 900xxx stamped on it. In another posting "1974 Porsche 911 Targa " a gentleman believed it could be a 1965 2.0 case. Original 2.7 magnesium case was replaced with this. Any info greatly appreciated.

Definitely not worthless. Prepare for lots of PMs.

That eBay price is dumb. $5K is a fair price for this case.

That's what I thought. Maybe I will find another case or engine for my car and let someone use this if they have an earlier car

Maybe check on the Early S Registry? I suppose with the case being available something likely happened to the original chassis, but if that car is still out there, then this case would be worth a lot more.
Also check with Bob Fleming (username Fleming on Pelican). He can probably offer more insight. Mark

That's way low, worth 2-3 times that as a bare case.

'65 everything is big money these days.
Did I tell you that they took my 67 car and killed a nice little numbers matching 912 to harvest it for sheet metal for a '65 restoration? $20k for a car to kill. But that '65 will be $300-400k when done.

And I'd strip it before selling. Might have real RS or RSR parts used on the rest of it. That stuff used to be easy to buy as service parts.

Last summer after advertising on Early S for three weeks, I sold a Sand cast Aluminum case made in 1964 for $5,500 that had a few broken fins and the mains were bored oversized.

Really do not know if the case has been altered in any fashion. All I know id the original owner who flew for Lufthansa replaced the lower case from the original magnesium to this aluminum case. I am assume the top parts are the original to the 74. It would be nice to let the case go to someone who needs it for an early car and put a later 2.7 3.0 or 3.2 in. Probably need to pull the motor and get some advice. I guess these motors were not worth a lot 20 some years ago. I bought my first 1973 911 coupe for $5500 in 1994 and sold it for $6800. I thought I was quids up

I have no idea of the value of the case you have. However, if you are interested in helping someone find there original case, early911sregistry has a 'lost and found' thread where people post.

I would have to inspect that case split and in person for me to offer any money.
But again it's me . And I've been hit before.

The last three numbers have been changed. The 900 has the casting texture underneath yet the last three have what looks like file marks. Then look at the radius of the rib. It's changes to a sharper radius where the last three letters are.

What's the type number? Is there one? Might be a replacement case.
