WTF! PM strikes again Rant

I seriously think I'm like 1 for 10 on buying stuff on pelican! What the hell is going on? I'm always the first one to post "I'll take it" on the thread but somehow, someway, magically someone else has PM'd the person prior to me and in this last case I was working out the details of the shipping with the person when they said that there was a first dibs buyer that finally just showed up out of the woodwork.? We're talking about a fairly new ad that I am immediately jumped on that I'll take it within several hours of the original posting. I'm getting so tired of this routine, it's making me to not want to ever trying to buy something here. I seriously think there needs to be a rule that the person interested has to post that they will buy it in the thread. So frustrated! Can you tell? LOL The worst part was that he said he wanted to honor the "pelican code" of first come first serve. More like the pelican code of someone else offered more than his asking price and hence more than me so he immorally accepted. I've waited three days for the shipping quote to now find out that there's a first buyer before me. Sorry rant over

Matt Monson 04-28-2017 05:03 PM

I only allow people to pm me, no dibs. Completely removes the ambiguity. Though an honest person can always show a screenshot of the time stamp from the contact regardless of contact form.

nathanbs 04-28-2017 05:07 PM

Pm is super ambiguous to everyone else. Why not allow "dibs"? That's the only transparent way

nathanbs 04-28-2017 05:22 PM

Low and behold my rant worked lol. The original buyer backed out yet again. Seller was being honest and was just trying to do the right thing

Because I don't care about transparency. Either you trust me as a man of my word or you don't. So many people do drive by dibs and never come back. That extra step of moving into a person to person pm conversation seems to make people more committed. I also put a time limit on PMs. I put it right in the ad, if you pm me you'll take it and I reply and don't hear from you in 6 hours the next guy in line gets it. And I will keep talking to number 2 telling him status while I wait to hear back. This isn't Ebay. You do NOT get 24 hours to pay.

I've seen the same guy have "dibs" on the same part (like a set of 6x16 fuchs) in 3 or 4 different threads at the same time. The sellers don't notice because they only watch their own thread, but you will see it if you watch closely.

Couldn't you just apply the same set of rules to the "got dibs" posters? 6 hour time limit or whatever? It's business, it shouldn't be you either trust me or not. This is the Internet after all and not a bonafide business with a storefront

It is where I'm from.

I always PM. If it's an item I'd like to buy why should I bump the thread by posting? I simply PM and ask where I should paypal the money. If the item isn't available for some reason like they sold it on rennlist or to a local or whatever I don't get my panties in a bunch. There is nothing that says that the seller must offer the item exclusively through Pelican or that I (or anyone else) have the right to decide who the seller ultimately strikes a deal with.

copbait73 04-29-2017 10:17 AM

I sell and I buy. When I buy I post both, thread and PM.

Lately I've been selling a few surplus items and I always check postings and PM to establish order and I notify responders of order. I've never had someone PM me with a higher bid, nor would I take it out of order. If there is a problem pattern on Pelican it is the fellow members who make claim then go silent.

I have a lot experience on eBay, but Pelican is a personal transaction site for me, Porsche guy to Porsche guy. When I sell I think my price is fair to you and when I buy you are fair with me. Possibly not always the case (?) but that is how I choose to do business with friends.

If there is one recommendation I can make. When buying wrap up your transaction quickly. Going silent for 24 hours is not recommended or you may get passed over.

Matt Monson 04-29-2017 10:28 AM

What copbait said. Clear honest communication is key. I use the rules I do because I've dealt with so many flaky buyers and have no patience anymore. The sense of community has been eroded and so much feeding frenzy too. You're making a deal and the seller sets down the baseline. There is not internet buyer's bill of rights in play here and assumptions about buying and selling mores are so often to blame for the misunderstandings. State it up front and much fewer issues.

I'm glad Nathan's seller did the right thing.

OSI930 is outstanding! OSI930 seems to have a ton a porsche parts and sold me a NOS early tell tale boost gauge for $300 less than the rough or used ones I found on ebay. And he got it to me in a few days!

Sometimes you eat the bear, and sometimes the bear eats you.

It's the name of the game when you deal with so many different personalities and types of people. At the end of the day, rant all you want, but most people are just doing their best to get by and to help people out with selling their old stuff. The 'customer isn't always right' around here, nor is the person who PMs first. It all comes down to timing sometimes (especially if it's a rare part) - and others it's just maybe the tone of your message.

There are other more important aspects of life to get frustrated on, and although I see your point whenever I'm in the game looking for something I sometimes put out a wanted ad. I did a couple weeks ago, three people said they would sell a part to me, and never got back to me at all. I contacted one guy who said he'd sell me a part three weeks after, and he didn't get the chance to pull it off the engine yet. I guess people have more important things to do and I don't blame them.

Maybe you shouldn't use 'LOL' in your ads or posts either.

Thanks one mod the factory should have but on all 930s. That and sport seats. I don't know what they were thinking... A 930 without sport seats is like a beautiful woman with no backside.. lol

Just getting rid of stuff most likely will not ever use. Sometime not worth the trouble just yet. Maybe to Hershey in a few years. A friend always liked that place.

You just devalued your car exponentially. You might as well get some headers, a real turbo to provide boost for that gauge and better intercooler. :D

You're absolutely correct however I come from a perspective that service is a big part of selling. I think the service is lost on Pelican in a lot of cases as most aren't looking to do multiple or many transactions so they like you don't give a crap about the buyers experience. Whether I'll never see someone again or not I try to make them feel "taken care of" and that I appreciate their business.
