I sent you a pm.

If I were you I would go back against the dealer ,it has 80k miles and was in good condition, there are laws in most states that don't allow a total loss mechanically on a vehicle purchased less than 30 days prior , doesn't matter about the financing its there baby ..
Let them know you' ll sue for misrepresentation or faulty merchandise just check your local
consumer laws..

I'm normally the first one to call for dealers to be hung, drawn and quartered, but here can it be that the OP simply had bad luck? Can you tell when an IMS is about to go bad or does it happen suddenly?

Sometimes they give you warning but many have lost an engine with no clues given.

Thanks for the info guys. According to the folks over on the Rennlist forum, a potential IMS failure can be found beforehand if you have someone who knows the symptoms to look for during a PPI. I did not get that, unfortunately.

I have decided to get my car rebuilt by Jake Raby (Home). I'm sure that it's in really good hands.

Raby has a major reputation - especially in the flat four world. Glad you're giving the car another chance.

What kind of warranty has he promised for the rebuild ?

Haven't got that far into the questions yet. We only started talking about the rebuild. Just decided I was going to hire the best in the business. Now, I gotta start saving...

I'm sorry for your issues. I have heard too many of these IMS stories. A friend of mine had a similar issue, at around 80k miles (after years of bragging about how reliable his 997.1 was), the IMS let go at a stop light.

Porsche should at least step up and offer crate rebuilds (with an IMS fix) at a low cost - that would help ease a bit of the financial pain, maybe a $9k engine vs $18k...

Good Luck

I had my 2000 Porsche(996)911 that I purchased in Jan.(2017)refurbished by Jake Raby at Flat 6 Innovations.I highly recommend them. They do outstanding work and kept me updated almost on a daily basis and sent me pictures of the work at every step.I sent my Porsche to Jake Raby to get it checked out..the cam chain tensioner was in pieces in my oil pan.The engine was fixin' to implode.Had an LN Engineering IMS bearing and RMS installed along with a host of other parts. My car runs like brand new with only 49,500 miles.I would recommend Jake and Flat 6 Innovations to anyone with a Porsche...Good Luck

A JR rebuild is $20k+ with a 6-12 month wait. My coworker had the same misfortune.

These days he has teamed up with Charles Navarro at LN and they are building some of the best m96 and m97 engines in the country.

I hope you're kidding. What this thread is isn't an ad, but a roadmap to lead guys out of the scary woods. The more you have threads like this the easier it is to search and find the answers you need when your car goes poop. It's up to the individual to make the decision to re-build or bail, but at least they have some of the facts after reading a thread like this. Bashing people for recommending a qualified outfit doesn't help anyone.
And no I don't know Jake, but I did find a 356 about a mile from his shop once, he was surprised when I told him it was in his backyard practically.

^^ Just in time Adam, another year or two, and the bamboo would have won.

996 Repair Solution

By my estimate you will net more by buying a good used motor and selling/trading in versus selling as is or rebuilding a motor. Here is an example used motor on Rennlist (that I know nothing about beside what's in listing) for $6500 with reasonable miles.

https://rennlist.com/forums/parts-marketplace/978552-fs-3-6l-m96-motor-with-65k-miles.html

Good luck with your situation.

Sell it. That's what I'll do.

Check the Lemon Laws in your state.

There are exceptions but generally Lemon Laws are for new cars only and will only cover a used car if there is a written warranty provided with the sales documents.
