987 Caymans

Last night I almost bought an 07 base Cayman. Luckily, I stuck to my plan and the dealer wouldn't do my max out the door price for the car (23k) so I walked.

Thinking about it now, early Cayman prices have barely changed in years. When the 987 was still in production I remember seeing early Caymans advertised for mid-20s. Now an 07 is 11 years old and still mid-20s. Comparable 09-11 cars can now be had in the upper 20s.

Should I just increase my budget a little and get an 09+?

Absolutely. If it's only an extra $8k-$10k I think it is money well spent.

I would increase the budget a little. You were right to walk. Forget about it - $23K is right. If you don't want to increase, just wait four months - and then you'll get a nice one when people start selling in the winter.

I see the "S" models private sale for ~$23K pretty regularly. Even less with some miles

I would go for a base 987.2 - much better engine (so far) and the base 2.9 has same performance as the 987.1 "S".

I have seen a few 987.2 base for ~ high $20s as you mention. For me - wanting to do some track time the 97 - 2008 Porsche's are off limits. They just were not designed to control oil slosh and temp in a track environment.

Just bought a high mile 08S with bad motor for $8k. Not bad for a car that was $90k new. That's right, a $50k car with $40k of options. $10k of engine work and I'll have a nice driver.

That's freaking sweet. Imagine, saving $82K (Yes, I know it needs engine work, but then saving $72K) that's pretty dang amazing.

I would opt for the 987.2 if you can find one you want around $30k. Unfortunately due to the recession it can be hard to find one in the specs you want due to the much lower production numbers. One with proper paperwork and the options I want hover around the mid 30s at which point I can buy 981.

The question is Matt, you gonna get Jake Raby in da house to help with that engine rebuild?

Why would I do that when I've got Chris Cervelli? We are dry sumping it. And sequential gearbox.

Cool new ride, MountainMan! And holy shart would I love to have a sequential box in a car - clutchless upshifts are the bomb (don't know if that works in a car like it does with a bike, though).

Wow - will you post details on how that is done? very interested to see the process. Although Cervelli may not want to tell everyone his secrets.

My car will be the prototype for his 987 kit. He's been running it on his endurance Boxsters and selling them for a year or two. You can't just go buy stuff and put it together. About half of it is custom and proprietary. I'm
Assuming you are talking about the dry sump.
