Chromed/damaged wheels are candidates for track racing

Not for restoration.

Does this also apply to a car with a rust hole?

Chromed wheels can be restored.

Correct, had a pair restored by Rick Hart and they look every bit as good as the never chromed matching pair he also restored.

Challenge with restoration methods used for wheels quoted in this thread is: Material has been removed, it shows.

The 14" wheel is the worst here: huge amount removed, still pitting shows.

I've tried anodizing Fuchs and the source of random mottling seems to be a mystery. I suspect it takes an anodizer with a lot of experience to 'save' a wheel that shows mottling. In the case of the wheel I dealth with, I had it re-polished twice and the mottling came back - but in different places. The (aircraft) anodizing service threw up their hands.

With the wheels I received from Al, I blotted some cheap Ace Hardware paint thinner on a paper towel and wiped it on the finish - the paint came right off. What surprised me more was his attitude when I stated I was unhappy with the results. The anodizing did come out nice, though and he did redo the paint but it was a crappy experience. Never again.
