1972 911t project,parts,value?

Hello. I am new to Porsches. I build air cooled vw's as a hobby. That said I picked up this 72 911t and am unsure of direction to take. It is 100% complete, numbers matching,34k miles. An a/c car with sportomatic n 2.4 flat 6 with stacks.. The top, front fenders, rear deck door lowers are shot as is all lower sheet metal. A and B pillars perfect. Good seats surprisingly. Is it worth the approx $20k+ it would take to restore? Couldn't see it left outside to rot any further so to my wife's chigrin I brought it home. Not sure what it is even worth as it sits.

Yes it's worth restoring. But $20k? I think closer to $40. But to make a driver you might get away with $20k.

I think you are being very optimistic on the restore price. Not questioning your skills at all, just speaking from experience of digging in to a non-galvanized 72 rusty piece of crap

Making huge, sweeping assumptions that the rest of the car is in the same condition as the exterior, you'd be looking at:

Motor Rebuild inc MFI: $15k
Fuel/Oil System: $3k
Sporto Rebuild: $6k???? (no clue)
Targa Top: $2k
Interior: $10k

....and that gets you driver-quality excluding rust repair or body/paint. All said and done you'd probably be $55k in restore on a car worth about $55k. Great way to amortize the cost of ownership of one of these cars if you have the ability to do a lot of the work yourself.

Trying to maximize profit: sell the sucker. People pay crazy money for these money pits. Prob get a taker at $25k.

I figured it was low. 40k would hurt, but done right they seem to hold value.

Maybe better as a parts car? Don't want to tear it apart if worth saving

BWAHAHAHAHA. Right on. This is the truth. Sell it, sell it, sell it. Then buy something like a SC with the profit. Hilarious, but people really, really do pay for pain. 911 pain. Heck, I'm such a prima donna with rust, cleaning up my battery area is enough for me on the '75S. Thank god I got a California desert car. I couldn't take the work anymore (and yes, in my youth I had my fair share of VW Ovals that I put pans into and it sucked).

Scary numbers for sure. It is rough and I have 6 other projects I haven't gotten to. Couldn't help bringing it home. Always loved the early 911's

....or better yet, bolt on that fiberglass Scuderia Everglades body that's beside it, put a whirlwind prop on the back and go swamp buggy'n.

I was afraid that may be the consensus

Lol. Actually a Bradley GT body I pulled for a different dune buggy body. It is free to any home other than mine BTW.

Would be a sin to break it up. A pain to restore. Sell it as is. $15k is low on the engine work,

Thanks. I hope that doesn't happen. If I don't end up rebuilding it, I wonder where a poor neglected 911 sits in the market. Of course anything is worth what someone is willing to pay for it. Have to figure a baseline

COA verified engine matches VIN. Trans is a 925/17 sportomatic out of a 76? It does seem to have a couple decent options, and was born silver.

That looks like a pretty big project. That rust is going to be a hurdle you are going to have to figure out how to get over.
