Price check--SC Targa in proper '70s color
After 9 years, I'm ready to move on to my next Porsche. I've been watching the market and I think it's a good time to sell my '81 SC Targa. Pelican community input and Tech Articles have kept this car running (most of the time) that I've owned it. It is a great driver with Preservation class possibilities (for those so inclined).
It's a Cali/Texas/ Florida car with zero winters or rust. It was ordered in this orange (Continental? Gulf?) from the factory and it is 90% original paint. 137,000 miles. Rebuilt the 3.0 recently with 964 cams and early exhaust (sorry, smog testers). Just refreshed the transmission and new clutch. Ice cold upgraded air conditioning. Factory sport seats, LSD. New brakes all around, good rubber. Usual upgrades and repairs. So, what should I ask? I was thinking of offering it here first, but I've got an interested buyer here in the southeast who's waiting for my price. Here's a couple of photos from today (yeah, it was sunny......and 45 degrees.)http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1515119137.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1515119137.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1515119137.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1515119137.JPG |
Rare color, sport seats, early rubber tail, rebuilt motor, and nice upgrades. Even with the mileage I’d say $40-45k.
|
Start at $39k and see what offers you get.
|
Nice car - dont let it go for less than 40K.
|
There have been two continental orange cars for sale recently. Check on F/S section here and there was a coupe on the Samba. IIRC the coupe was in the 50's and was fairly recently still unsold. It had the rubber tail.
If it was my car i would swap out the speaker grills for something less ugly and more period correct looking. Whats the condition of the Targa top ? does it need a re build, what kind of records do you have. It sounds like a nice car, i think high 30's is about right. |
Absolutely love the car...... I would ask $45,000 looking for a final number $42,000 to $44,000; That color which I believe is Continental Orange commands a premium.. The other premium features are the LSD, sport seats and tails..... This is an exceptional example of a 80s Targa.
This is not to say it does not need a bit more tidying up. What size wheels, 7sX16 all around? How many owners? |
If you want over $40k, install a period correct stereo system, steering wheel, shift knob etc... Get it professionally detailed (maybe paint correction), take excellent photos and provide all documentation in the advertisement. Oh and wait till the spring and throw it up on BAT. Best of luck with sale.

I always think that targas look better without tails, and those black tails are especially ugly.
And +1 on getting the car professionally detailed. I think it's a high 30's car, mostly because it's a targa. If you already have an interested buyer, then I'd try to make that deal. Avoid all the tire-kickers, nitpickers, and dreamers. |
$45K for an 81 SC because it's orange? I thought the bubble had burst. This car doesn't do it for me, no disrespect to the DE instructor/owner.
Seems way overpriced to me, by like 10k. |

Guys, thanks for all the input. As I said in my first post, if the potential buyer doesn't work out, I will post it on Pelican for sale along with lots of photos and links. I'd really like to see it go to a good home. A couple of points:
1) The factory sport seats aren't perfect; the driver's has been redone in the past and the passenger cushion leather is cracked. I've decided to let the next owner fix them. See-- http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-marketplace-discussion/980460-fix-seats-leave-original.html 2) The paint is original except for the H4 trim rings and rear valance. Along with that originality comes the stone chips and small flaws. As I said, it's a really good driver. 3) In response to some of your comments; the top is in good shape, I'm the third or fourth owner, the speaker grilles ARE ugly (good idea smort81!) I plan to "detail to retail" and those wheels are 16 x 7s all around (good catch Macroni!), albeit with 205 & 225 boots. So watch the classified ads soon, guys and thanks again! |
Sport seats, LSD, skittles color.......this car will do well on market. I'm in the "start it over $40k crowd" and see where it settles.
Few things I would address before marketing it: 1) Could just be sun reflection, but it looks like the driver side bolster is torn on the sport seat. That's an absolute must fix. 2) As others have said, trade out those speakers and detail the hell out of it 3) Get it into a Porsche shop; the ride height looks off in the front |

One of my favourites. Caramel/Burnuss Braun. Pic of my own SC before I got it. Now it lives in Germany:(http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1515179902.jpg

Color first?
Pass me that baby poop brown one, or the signal orange one, or the new baby home nursery blue one. Forget the faded paint, worn interior and drivers seat, paint chips and ugly speaker covers, not to mention the 137K miles. Because, well, it's an ultra rare 81 Targa. Uh, no. Please pass the Columbian blunt you guys are smoking. There are better 3.2's out there than this for similar if not better money than $45K. Does anyone remember this thread? http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-marketplace-discussion/981461-thoughts-price-88-911-a.html Oh wait. It's not orange. |
